Body of McCormick Found After Weeklong Search
The body of John Medill McCormick grandson of Mark Hanna and heir to a publishing fortune, was found in the Sandia Mountains near Albuquerque New Mexico after a weeklong search begun when his friend Richard Whitmer failed to return from a mountain expedition. Foresters said the recovery would be difficult and delayed by terrain. The two young men from wealthy Albuquerque families had trained as climbers at a Colorado Springs school. The search involved Sandia and Isleta Indian scouts led by Marion Perce.

OD and AD Open Retail Stores Clash Over Strategy
OD and AD planned to start their own business by opening retail stores. They disagreed on how to attract customers, leading to a clash of approaches as the partnership faced a turning point.
Storeowner’s frugal plan to draw customers outlined
The owner believed attracting customers required low prices, which meant shaving expenses. He minimized costs across operations to sustain cheap offers and entice shoppers.
How OD and AD Opened Their Stores to Attract Customers
OD initially avoided costly lighting and fronts, buying large quantities of a few lines. AD then painted the store in cheerful colors, updated windows and fixtures with bright lighting, and stocked well known items in smaller lots. Frequent window displays drew shoppers, boosting sales and prompting restocking.

OD and AD Adopt Newspaper Advertising Strategy
OD failed to attract customers with house to house circulars and hired distribution, finding limited reach and high cost. He shifted to newspaper ads read by thousands, noting readers prefer timely news and full city delivery. AD expanded ads, driving higher sales and lower per unit costs, enabling lower prices and better values for customers.
OD Fails and AD Succeeds in Advertising Lesson
OD opens a store but fails after a slow sale and failed clearance. He never advertised in newspapers so few city residents knew of his opening or closing. AD advertises truthfully, draws readers, and builds a busy store with growing stock and staff.
Advertising and the store’s appeal to customers
OD asked how the AD store built a fine business with many customers. AD cited making the shop attractive and offering desired merchandise, but emphasized advertising. He described publishing news about service and merchandise to reach the widest audience quickly through newspapers.
