A majority of the Railroad Commission agreed to a new East Texas proration order in Austin. A. Freeman, owner of Royal Drug Store and Lewis Hotel Drug Store, was arrested this morning and jailed on a swindling charge. He allegedly accepted a $50 check from Compton, a slot machine dealer, and claimed to represent District Attorney Thomerson, Sheriff Thompson, County Attorney Myers, and Constable Elliott to shield mint vending machine operations. Mayor Ernest O Thompson urged a large Amarillo delegation to attend the seven mile pavement opening between Pampa and Carson County. The party will join the Lions Club in Pampa with W F Lampe as highway head and George Biggs coordinating.
More than 70 000 in cash was dumped into the city treasury on the last day of 1930 taxes. About 80 percent of the 1930 Amarillo city taxes were paid by Wednesday with many taxpayers paying by mail. Delinquency penalties include 10 percent plus a $1 cost and 6 percent interest. Time for payment was extended five months by the city commission. The 1930 tax rate stands at 1 dollar per 100 assessed valuation.
In New York on July 1 the Wiley Post and Harold Gatty round the world flight faced a power struggle among backers and managers. Clarence Hall, financier, clashed with Bruno and Blythe, the aviators’ business managers, then joined by Mrs. Wiley Post against the mayor’s welcoming committee. Dallas reports a second Texas death from heat with Jack Moyer a Greenville refinery worker felled by the heat. In nearby Tyler Ed Storey, 63, collapsed and died while working in a cotton field. The national heat toll nears six hundred.
Harry L. Fagin, 63, a Beaumont Texas oil field promoter years ago, died in Los Angeles yesterday. He had lived in the city since 1912.
Paris reports Franco American negotiators did not reach an agreement on the Hoover moratorium plan after talks led by Mellon and Edge with Laval. They will reconvene at 9:30 P M tomorrow as Washington prepares to publish a document outlining divergent positions. The U S also asked France to modify several proposals.
Mrs. Harold Gatty, a busy young mother of three, travels by air from Los Angeles to New York aboard a Transcontinental & Western flight on her first airplane ride. She expects arrival at 6 35 P M E T, while Harold Gatty pilots the famed Post and Gatty vessel toward the end of the world flight, aiming for about 9 30 P M KE T. The couple are part of the famous air navigation team, with Mrs Gatty expressing confidence in her husband’s sailing skills and devotion to the mission.
Fate of zoning in Amarillo will be decided July 21 at a special election. Only qualified voters who are property owners may vote, with four voting sites listed. Mayor Thompson cited few requests for the election and said it would let residents express preference before final ordinance passage.
The Texoma Natural Gas Company, also known as Continental Construction Company outside Texas, opens operating and producing headquarters in Amarillo occupying over half the fourth floor of the Rule building. A Texas prison blames embalming fluid cocktails for a deadly spree. Ernest Hamilton, 23, died in convulsions. Aubrey Charles and William Duncan went blind. Robert Stewart was seriously ill. The spree occurred Sunday afternoon behind the yard blacksmith shop. The warden suspects embalming fluid stolen from the morgue and notes no alcohol was missing from other inside-wall locations.
In Salonica on July 1, Jews deserted the city amid fear of renewed communally based bloodshed. Authorities considered martial law as troops were ordered to fire after three warnings. Ten deaths and about fifty injuries were reported from yesterday’s fighting, with the Jewish quarter burned and over 200 dwellings razed.
