At Madison Square Garden on July 1 the Democratic National Convention recessed after the twenty fourth ballot with no nominee. McAdoo declined from 40 1/2 to 48 1/2 votes while Smith gained 2 14 and John W. Davis climbed from 61 to 129 1/2, with Underwood at 39 1/2 as leaders held steady.
At Madison Square Garden on July 1 Clark supporters led by his son Bennett pressed to defeat McAdoo. They blamed McAdoo for Champ Clark’s Baltimore defeat and circulated a letter from a Supreme Court justice accusing McAdoo of using money to influence the nomination. Senator Reed joined in challenging McAdoo as an old Clark ally and foe.
Sixteenth and seventeenth ballots yielded little change from the fifteenth. McAdoo led with 471.5 votes, Smith 312.5, Davis 64, Underwood 42, Robinson 28. On the eighteenth, McAdoo 470.6, Smith 312.5, Davis 66 as Smith held steady and Davis rose. A leader declined to be named as the convention moves toward page two.
