Stove Blast at Post Fatal for Nichols Family

A coal stove explosion leveled the Leroy Nichols home at Post injuring five family members. Mrs Nichols 25 is not expected to live. Nichols 26, a salesman, said he added a fluid he believed to be kerosene with some gasoline mixed in. Children Billy Jean 7 Allen Roy 5 and L C Nichols 3 also injured. All were taken to a sanitarium at Lubbock.

House Approves County Oversight of Old Age Pensions

The Texas House passed 65 to 64 a Cathey measure to require county commissioners to pass on old age pension applications. The Board of Control, as the Old Age Assistance Commission, would follow county recommendations when eligibility matches the law. A prior amendment to require full disclosure to commissioners courts was defeated.

The Second Court of Civil Appeals reversed and remanded a $15 000 judgment awarded to Tom F Hunter of Wichita Falls in his $100 000 libel suit against the Houston Post. Hunter ran for governor in 1934 and was defeated by James V Allred. The editorials in question appeared August 22 23 and 24 1934 under the titles Dangerous Experiment The State Races and Do We Want a Revolution.

Treasury data show January receipts of 60 683 087.89 and expenditures of 61 447 473.62 with a balance of 1 738 054 402.66. Customs receipts for the month are 36 062 800.79. For the fiscal year since July 1 receipts total 2 416 954 899.50 and expenditures 4 136 524 069.70, including 1 695 322 787.45 of emergency spending, giving an excess of 1 719 589 170 220. Gross debt stands at 34 507 652 977.81, up 1 242 955 24 from the prior day. Gold assets total 11 344 972 010.54 with 113 836 387.85 in inactive gold.
