William S. King of Philadelphia fell overboard but regained command after injury. Lifeboat chaos followed a huge wave. 18 aboard on one boat, 14 on another with 3 rescued. A rescue ship, the American tanker V. C. Fairbanks, arrived in about 20 minutes. Thirty-three survivors of the torpedoed British tanker were landed at a Canadian port after 33 hours afloat. Survivors said a big submarine sank the ship with two torpedoes. it was the third Atlantic torpedoing off Canada in 24 hours. One noted death was Benjamin Franklin, who died in 1790.
