A vacant acetylene lighting failure sparked a fireball at a Turner Idaho church hall during a Turner versus Central Idaho basketball game. Seven died including janitor James McCann and three of his sons, with many more injured as walls collapsed and crowd rushed for the only exit. Players Elmer Anderson and Ival Lowe of Central Idaho were among the injured.
A meeting of Texas traffic representatives is set for February 3 in Fort Worth. S. J. Dr. M. L. Fuller told City Manager Jeff Bartlett that Amarillo recorded no new smallpox cases in the last 24 hours, the second straight day with no additions. Forty five hours without new cases marks a hopeful turn, with quarantine patients expected to be discharged. No deaths were reported in the period and remaining cases were in isolation or private homes.

A Missouri-Kansas-Texas passenger train collided with an Oklahoma Railway bus in Tulsa. Drivers C. D. Hartzell and Russell M. Schwarz died. Injured include Mrs. Ruby Beaver 17 severely, unconscious, Wylene Baldwin 12 with leg injuries, Ruth Strong 11 with head and body bruises. Mrs Beaver was hurled through a window and carried to the engine before stop.
Alarm over rapid spread of lump jaw or actinomycosis in feedlot cattle. Dr. E F Lanham and Clifton Carter a federal representative investigate cause as the disease moves through entire herds. The condition creates jaw swelling and lowers sale prices but is rarely fatal.
Austin Jan 27 A favorable committee action is forecast for tonight on the Petsch bill to amend the Texas libel laws. The judiciary committee has an open meeting at 7 30 p m In his message to the legislature Governor Moody favored changes in the present law.
A petty thief stole a beehive from the rear of a residence in San Antonio. The hive contained no bees at the time, leaving no stings or injuries reported. Local authorities investigated the odd theft today.
L F Brite of Marfa Texas was elected president of the National Livestock Association at Salt Lake City succeeding C M ODonnell of Bell Ranch New Mexico who was named an honorary vice president due to illness. Other officers named include William Pullman Baker Oregon H G Boice California Hubbard Russell Nevada George Russell New Mexico Victor Culbertson Colorado Charles D Carey Wyoming and Charles K Collins. El Paso will host the 1928 convention while San Francisco withdrew its invitation with plans to meet there in 1920.
The United States saw a net decrease of 1.3 percent in living costs for 1926, despite a 0.5 percent rise from July to December. The largest annual increase occurred in Boston at 1.5 percent, while Los Angeles recorded the greatest decrease of 2.4 percent.

Chicago January 27. Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker found not guilty of fixing a 1919 game in Detroit versus Cleveland. Commissioner Landis canceled suspensions and restored both players to the reserve lists. Neither was present for the ruling which cleared them of charges linked to Dutch Leonard's testimony.
San Antonio January 27 Texas League club owners met in executive session to arrange the season timetable and discuss possible player trades. President Doak Roberts had forecast an opening date of April 1 in Dallas and the clubs were expected to confirm it.
