New York report says Frank Mata a seaman was jailed on $1000 bail for hiring Frank Castra to assault his wife Mrs Mata. Castra offered payment but refused to assault a woman and advised seeking the $80 instead. Mrs Mata notified authorities leading to Castra's grand jury custody.
Charles F. Kettering, head of GM research, says no miracle age after war. He predicts a gradual rise in invention, a temporary wartime hump, and asserts American cars will be among the best. He dismisses secret weapons and suggests access to German wartime plans could shorten the conflict.
Medford Oregon reports a fox terrier named Two Bits fell 800 feet from an 800 foot cliff while chasing a imaginary squirrel. Owner Bill Ziegler saw the dog two weeks later crawling up the trail with head down and tail wagging, likely cushioned by snowdrift.
FSA recruiting team from Missouri plans trips to the Bootheel to hire workers for Arizona cotton fields and California orchards. T. G. Moore Clifford Davis and L. L. Aronson lead the mission, with travel to Sikeston Missouri and a gathering of recruits in Memphis Tennessee before shipment. One train load is expected to pass Amarillo next week.
The Senate voted 70 to 10 to permit the merger of the Postal Telegraph Company and Western Union. The measure moves to the House after a similar Senate measure stalled last session. Senators cited large losses at Postal and a $9 million debt to the Reconstruction Finance Corp. The chamber also rejected a Taft amendment to cut guaranteed employment from five to two years.

Los Angeles report says Robert Folkes, 21, a train car cook, is held on suspicion of murder after admitting heavy drinking on a train trip where Martha Virginia James, 21, wife of a naval ensign, was killed in lower berth 13. Folkes claims innocence and says he saw nothing. The investigation follows a transit across Oregon.
