Tonight and Friday a fair pattern with slight temperature changes. Extremes today 46 and 27. Hourly readings range from 7 a.m. at 28 to 1 p.m. at 46. Texas regions show partly cloudy tonight with cooler southwest portions and west coast. West Texas fair with little change. Alfred E. Smith may head the ticket with Jesse Jones of Houston as vice president. The idea arose at a beefsteak dinner at the National Democratic club after Gov. Dan Moody of Texas declined to run. Jones, director of finance for the Democratic national committee, helped secure Houston’s convention support. The Herald Tribune notes the move would aid Smith if pursued.
William J. Burns says his hotel room and the rooms of his operatives were rifled. Counsel for Burns cites a stolen document from witness Mrs. Jeanette Lantz in a Hamilton hotel room during the McMullin Sinclair Burn contempt case proceedings.
In Chicago on January 26, gangsters bombed the homes of city officials allied with Mayor Thompson. Dynamite damaged the residence of Charles C. Fitzmorris, the city comptroller and former police chief, while blasts shattered Dr. William H. Reid's home, the commissioner of public service. The bombs were thrown from a closed car, seen as retaliation against officials who have pressured gangsters to leave town.
United Press reports two bandit gangs are hunted across Oklahoma after bank raids on Tuesday and Wednesday. One robber killed, a banker slain, and a sheriff shot. Marietta posses sweep Red River for Love County National Bank robbers. one dead, three in custody. Cordell seeks others in First State Bank of Bessie raid. Ben Keihn killed. Fletcher N. Rickard of Panhandle, Texas listed as slain.
A blaze at the Warner Bros motion picture studio in Hollywood caused damage estimated at $200000 and threatened to engulf the entire plant. Firefighters fought the flames as crews worked to prevent spread.
In federal district court at Austin on January 26, Charles Cain received a fifteen month sentence on counterfeiting charges. Charles Hall alias Charles H. Kelly was sentenced to four years, and A Wallace to one year and one day.
Escapees Jack Davis and Clayton Tontz fled from Stinnett jail after hijacking charges and a Potter County murder indictment. Police traced leads across Borger Stinnett and oil towns then widened search to breaks along the Canadian river. Bed linens and a broom handle used to pry bars were found near the window.
New York, Jan. 26. William Fox, founder of a Brooklyn lantern-lighting theater, has acquired 300 theaters in a single deal. He now controls Westco with 250 West Coast houses and 50 Saxe circuit in Wisconsin, expanding his chain from 40 to 240 and planning 25 new theaters at an estimated cost of 150 million. Fox declined to reveal the price, saying reconstruction would require about 100 million.
Kansas City Jan 26 The drive to win Hoover’s Republican nomination starts in Jackson County tonight with a meeting at the Hotel Baltimore. A committee of political and business leaders will organize a Jackson County Hoover for President group.
In Los Angeles the Hickman murder trial opens before Judge J J Trabucco with Judge Hardy relieved. Jerome Walsh fights to delay, but Trabucco overrules, jury pool called as public crowd presses for seats outside the courtroom.
Bert Acosta, famed Trans Atlantic flyer, was sentenced to five days in New Haven county jail after pleading guilty to violating Connecticut aviation laws by flying low over Naugatuck yesterday. He also paid a $19.51 fine.
Harry J. Brooks took off from the air mail field at 8 50 this morning in his two cylinder flivver airplane. He carried 46 gallons of gasoline and planned to fly nonstop to Detroit after reaching Washington.
Dr O H Powers of First Baptist Wichita Walls presides at a Panhandle Baptist rally as leaders push a $1 500 000 drive to support debt payment for Baptist institutions. Group No 6 led by Dr G L Yates has held events in Vernon and Wichita Falls and will visit Pampa Dalhart Plainview Lubbock and Tulsa next week. Dr S F Groner serves as executive secretary.
An explosion at the Borger plant of Amarillo Producers and Refiners caused partial destruction and about 25000 dollars in losses. John Wrather, plant superintendent, was burned on face and hands as he shut off oil and climbed a tank to smother flames. His actions likely saved substantial further damage. The blast damaged six towers and many condenser coils and controls.
New York on January 26 reports the search for Leonard Kip Rhinelander in a separation suit brought by his wife Alice Jones formerly, on grounds of cruelty and abandonment. Westchester authorities admit difficulty locating him as summons and complaint are served without definite whereabouts.
The Oklahoma Bankers Association announced rewards of 250 dollars for arrest and conviction of the fugitive bandits. Family of Keihn and Sheriff Long likely to receive 250 dollars each for slaying two bandits. Gum stated there is no dispute over the Bessie bandit killing and doubts about Marietta incident.
George T. McDermott of Topeka was sworn in as a federal judge for the district of Kansas. Kansas now has two federal judges, the other being Judge John C. Pollock.
Dr W A Hotalen imperial lecturer of Birmingham Alabama confirms a Klan decision to unmask on Washingtons Birthday. A 4000 word public statement says general unmasking will follow the K Trio Degree for all members and secrecy about membership will end. Robe and white helmet remain official garb.
