The House voted 110 to 41 to pull the 1.65 million dollar White House construction fund for a presidential wing addition. Lawmakers also reclaimed 17 million dollars from the President’s Emergency Fund while defeating a GOP move to cut salaries of Truman and federal workers.
Senate will investigate the 36th Division across the Rapido River in Italy. Senator W Lee O Daniel of Texas introduced the measure in the Senate with the Military Affairs Committee to conduct the inquiry.
The United Nations Security Council voted to place Iran Greece and Indonesia on its agenda for next week and consider hearings. Soviet delegate Vishinsky opposed merits discussion but agreed to future agenda items while Bevin urged full inquiry and public airing of Greece charges.
The CIO Packinghouse Workers Union votes unanimously not to return to work as the USDA seizes five packing plants in Texas and Fort Worth at 12 01 tomorrow under a presidential order. Alford Brooks an 18 year old in Northwest Texas Hospital escapees while receiving treatment for an arm wound. He fled at 4 30 this morning in a hospital gown and is believed to have hidden in a Steffen Ice Cream Co truck, a yellow 1940 Ford pickup with license MT 4014, possibly linked to Tulsa and Swisher County burglary charges.

John L. Lewis reaffirms affiliation of the United Mine Workers with the American Federation of Labor and obtains a seat on the AFL council. Green rejects rumors of resignation to let Lewis become president and says Lewis will serve the current session. Lewis paid 9000 in January taxes for 600000 miners.
The test of the A bomb versus a modern warship in the Pacific would cost about a half billion dollars or more. Navy figures show 230 million for hulls and engines of 47 U S combat units used as the guinea pig fleet and more than 100 million for Navy transports making up about half of the 47 non combat types involved.
