Democratic members of the House foreign affairs committee voted to hear in secret session testimony from General George C. Marshall Admiral Harold R. Stark and Major General George H. Brett on the aid to Britain bill. Republicans opposed public testimony and the panel defeated Fish’s bid 13 to 10 on party lines.
Reports from Rumania describe three days of insurrection in Bucharest with 2500 to 3000 killed and mass murders of Jews. Antonescu appears to control the city with Iron Guard loyalists facing military crackdown and a house to house hunt for rebels.
Lord Halifax the British ambassador designate arrived in the United States aboard the battleship King George V. Bloom released a Marshall letter urging executive session for frank replies. Democratic majority agreed to hear Marshall Stark and Brett behind closed doors.

Archdiocese of San Antonio receives a rush of congratulatory telegrams for Bishop Robert E. Lucey who Pope Pius XII has named archbishop-elect. The 49 year old Amarillo native learned of the appointment as lines up with Vatican announcement and Associated Press cables. Lucey plans to move to San Antonio within two months and will lead the Texas and Oklahoma province including San Antonio Galveston Dallas Corpus Christi Amarillo and Oklahoma City Tulsa.
A large Amarillo cooking contest Sunday at the Paramount Theater showcases men as cooks. The event, a strictly male contest open to non professionals, starts at 1 PM and lasts all day. Local wives admire men who cook while noting limits in general kitchen skill.

Dodson township Justice Si Farmer fined his son Si Farmer Jr and seven friends $25 each plus $6 court costs for a neighborhood dice game. The fines were suspended as the father said he saw his duty and did it. Si Jr paid the costs for the others to keep them out of jail.
Five new housing permits were issued this morning by the Amarillo building inspector at city hall, totaling $16,350 for five five room homes. Permits went to Lee McMurtry 2906 Jackson St Keith Horton 1211 W Twentieth Ave Richard Reeves 2007 Madison St Leo Alonzo 720 N Lincoln St and Modern Housing Co 1312 Hillcrest.
