The Maverick Club football squad will be guests of Dewey Ashcroft at the Silver Grill for the annual banquet tomorrow night at 8. About 30 lettermen and members attend, with letters and awards for stars presented. Ralph Dykeman and Ashcroft both noted this year's event.
Berlin reports a German scout patrol on the western front south of Pirmasens captured prisoners and inflicted heavy enemy losses with no German casualties. The French command says an enemy thrust west of the Vosges was repulsed with losses.

Tokyo reports the finance ministry will not impose discriminatory tariffs on American goods after the trade treaty expires. An imperial ordinance to fix tariffs at current levels was expected to be issued tomorrow, signaling a pause in tariff changes.

At a luncheon, Amarillo Real Estate Board heard FHA district director E. T. Stearns and PHA assistant chief underwriter E. M. Lavell explain the Title 1 class 3 FHA loans for dwellings up to 2,500. The program targets lower income housing with no location or construction limits beyond loan type, except title two requires five percent down and total costs not exceeding 2,500.

A mule was killed in a collision near Twelfth Avenue and Western in Amarillo. Police report this is the first mule death in city traffic records. The crash involved a car driven by R. D. Robinette and a team driven by G. W. Yarbrough. the mule belonged to G. W. Joplin.
Sam Page leads the municipal golf association in urging Mayor Ross D. Rogers to open the new Thompson Park greens course in February rather than Easter. Page says details should be shared at Thursday night meeting.
Colorado officers notify Sheriff Adams they hold a felony warrant for Hugh Haralson an 18 year old Amarillo youth jailed here on robbery by assault. He is wanted in Colorado on forgery charges. Haralson and three other youths face robbery charges in the taxi driver holdup. they remain jailed under 2500 bond each.
The Nunn Electric Company will host its annual refrigerator dealers meeting and banquet at the Aviatrix Club tomorrow at 6 30 pm. More than 100 Leonard dealers from the Panhandle Eastern New Mexico and parts of Oklahoma will attend with Paul Lewis as guest of honor. The Aviatrix Club orchestra will provide music. The High Humidity Leonard model eliminates the need to cover dishes and defrost, with 1940 prices $30 to $60 lower than before.
City hall hosts a public hearing at 7 30 P M on extending Washington Street bus service from Twenty sixth Avenue to Thirty fourth Avenue. Dr and Mrs L V Cradit and other signers supported the petition presented weeks ago.
County Superintendent Carl Clifft announced the distribution of seven more National Youth Administration positions in Amarillo and surrounding county schools bringing the total to 99. Amarillo Senior High received four, Horace Mann two, and River Road one. Each job pays $6 monthly for a total of $594 across 99 posts.
The American Legion's new home at 1800 Harrison Street is rushed to finish before Friday's open house for Dr. O. E. Herndon, manager of the Veterans Hospital. Hanson Post publicity director Sam Page says open house from 8 to 10 30 p.m. invites the public. They expect 500 plus attendees.
The Chinese claim victory in western Shantung near Chaocheng after snowbound battles. They say they repelled a Japanese push in northern Hupeh and dynamited two enemy troop trains in Shantung.
John L. Lewis, head of the United Mine Workers, denounces Federal Security Administrator Paul V. McNutt as a political adventurer. He accuses McNutt of using troops against labor, calling for caution in presidential ambitions.
County court declared a dividend on a long standing cold check case this morning. Sureties for J G Ford of Canyon paid fines and costs totaling 36.25 and invested 107.09 in 15 checks Ford was charged with passing. Ford's 300 bond was forfeited last August making bondsmen liable. Ford pleaded guilty and bondsmen paid. Some checks date back to 1938. Ford is jailed on a Randall County charge with another swindling case filed in Potter County.
Taxpayers form lines at city hall as the final day approaches for those who did not pay the first installment on the split plan. The full amount is due by January 31 to avoid penalties. city tax payments are about five percent higher this year.
Collections now average 47 percent of the same period in 1999. Present tax collection total 506 736 45 dollars.
