Starving dogs prompt Milwaukee deaths inquiry
In Milwaukee on January 22 police led by Lieut. Walter McCaigue entered a south side house where 81 year old Mrs. Lucille Long and 83 year old Mrs. Rosina Trounce lay dead on a cluttered couch and cot as 17 gaunt dogs, chained to beds, jumped at the bodies. Miss Eileen Long, 17, said she had money to buy food but there was none, and she did not know what to do when the women died. Neighbors had complained of late night barking and the women’s odd behavior. Some dogs had been taken by the Humane Society but were later returned via court order before the scene and Miss Long was hospitalized.
