First American raid on Caroline Islands reported
U S South Pacific airmen struck at Rabaul and Kusaie Island in the Caroline Islands while bombing raids extended to Mili Atoll in the Marshalls. More than 100 Solomons based bombers attacked Rabaul, with 18 enemy planes down and 15 probably destroyed. Despite heavy losses, officials called the mission devastating and among the fiercest raids on Rabaul. Ground forces repulsed a Japanese counterattack at Cape Gloucester and expanded beaches at Arawe and Bougainville. Also noted are 1944 auto license tabs arriving in Texas and related filing details.
