Dodgers Bid For Veterans

NEW YORK Jan 20 Pres Ford Frick and William Harridge of the leagues meet to rework the 1943 schedule but bidding for veteran outfielders Paul Waner and Johnny Cooney may disrupt harmony. Waner and Cooney, both over 40, were released by Boston and could help the Dodgers with only five outfielders. Cooney played for Brooklyn in 1935-37 and Waner briefly in 1941. Branch Rickey says he is interested but nothing is decided yet. The Giants manager Mel Ott might join the bidding but is said to have little appeal. The two free agents are wintering in Sarasota Fla. and are former Dodgers.
