Washington reports the administration aims to push a over one billion dollar plan to fund civil works through spring. Protests flood Hopkins as Democratic leaders push the request to Congress. Hopkins explains hour reductions to 24 per week in cities and 15 per week in rural districts.
In Washington on January 19, Borah and Nye pressed a sharp attack on the NRA amid a broader monetary bills debate. Johnson was absent in New York. House members anticipated floor amendments as Republicans sought changes to Roosevelt era policy in a tense political clash.
Mrs. W. S. Grooch of El Paso Texas carried her two sons William six and Thomas seven one under each arm and jumped from an eight story Shanghai apartment building killing all three. Her husband Grooch a leading aviation official in the Far East was in shock and authorities noted she was to sail for the United States to visit a gravely ill father.
Seven convicts escaped from the Kansas State Prison at Lansing before 7 am after overpowering guard Clyde Deer. At least four were accused or convicted of murder. Three hours later the fugitives remained at large as guards, National Guardsmen, peace officers, and federal agents searched the area. The escape was aided by a ladder and improvised rope used to seal the south wall, and guards fired during the pursuit.
A count shows 361 pupils enrolled in afternoon and evening Emergency Education Classes at the high school. Of these 361, 205 attend the night classes. Amarillo College provides machine bookkeeping classes evenings from 6 to 9. Thirty four teachers are employed to run the project.

Gov. Miriam A. Ferguson announced two full pardons and one conditional pardon. Lee Bell of Potter County received a one year sentence for liquor law violation in December 1933. Stayton Lewis of Bexar County was pardoned for assault to murder, convicted in January 1933.

Lubbock January 19 AW. A Myrick Sr. longtime Lubbock resident and former Texas Legislature member died at his home from double pneumonia after a 10 day illness. He built a six story office building and owned a hardware store. He organized the Lubbock Hotel Operating Company and owned substantial hotel stock. He founded Myrick Farms near Shallowater with over 10 000 acres in cultivation. Funeral set for Saturday. Survived by widow married 1883 two sons Walter A Jr Russell a daughter Mrs Charles C Triplett and a brother Russell all of Lubbock.
