Atlanta Georgia January 18 1944 high winds across western Georgia killed at least 12 people and injured more than 100 including a Fort Benning soldier and six African Americans in Pike County.
A single plane of the Groupe Bretagne reporting from Cairo says General Jacques Le Clerc's central African army now aiding the Allies in north Africa captured 140 Italian troops at Fort Murzuch, 2,500 air miles southeast of Tripoli. The pilot, after exhausting his ammo, machine-gunned the garrison and dropped a surrender note when no cannon remained.
Washington January 18 The House rules committee approved a Cox resolution calling for an investigation of the Federal Communications Commission. The move was announced by Chairman Adolph Sabath Democrat of Illinois. Ossining New York January 18 A. M. Francel Sing Sing Prison executioner pleaded life or death for tire needs but was denied by the rationing board and told to take a train to work.

Billie Crable wins $2 for a fatal railroad tracks tip. Other tips named by several residents include Mrs. Dillard Hedge and Lottie Barrow among others.
Twelve people were killed in London during German air raids as anti aircraft shells exploded. Reports indicated the death toll could grow with further updates.
The Amarillo area remains cold with occasional light snow today and tonight. Temperatures rise slightly to 5 to 10 degrees above zero by early Tuesday. other West Texas zones stay cold with snow and rain in parts including Pecos Valley and El Paso area. Rio Grande and westward regions see lower temperatures and snow squalls in the north. The 24 hour temperature range ends with a maximum of 25 and a minimum of 4, noon at 3.
A. P. Sullivan spots a pair of his trousers on a youth nearby. The boy escapes but is chased by a motorist who flags down a car and rides the running board for several blocks. Police say the youth stole the trousers a week earlier.
Hollywood Jan 18 The Errol Flynn trial faced a jury dispute as prosecutors sought a mistrial and a new panel after claims two juror women talked too much. Judge Leslie E Still weighed removing the allegedly talkative women and replacing them with alternates.
British reports say 299 bomber force lost only one plane in a heavy Saturday night strike on Berlin. Observers describe vast fires viewed from 100 miles and weak German anti aircraft. Allies also report raids on London and fierce advances on North Africa and Eastern Front with Red Army claiming progress from Velikie Luki to the Caucasus. The last German foothold on the Volga at Stalingrad reportedly eliminated.
Weather notes report frigid Dallas conditions near the News Building and a 3 degree noon in Amarillo with a warming trend to 10 to 15 degrees. Intermittent snow expected, with dry flakes and limited amounts, while Denver shows 10 below. The low ends 4 above at dawn with a forecast of moderation later.
American bombers pounded the enemy held Shortland Island area of the Solomons Friday night and Saturday, the navy announced today. Ground forces on Guadalcanal killed 150 Japanese and took a number of prisoners as mop up operations continued.
The OPA's new milk price ceilings take effect January 18 and set Amarillo retail at 14 cents per quart with a 12 cent wholesale. Dalhart Borger Pampa and Childress at 13 cents and wholesale 11 1/2. Other Panhandle towns in Class 3 capped at 12 cents retail and 10 1/2 wholesale. Premium milks may exceed these prices if historically charged in December 1942.
Washington January 18 The Undersecretary Daniel W Bell says if the war ended tomorrow the Treasury could redeem about 15 billion dollars in war savings bonds with funds from its general account and could borrow more if needed He notes most bondholders will hold to maturity for full interest Series E bonds mature in 10 years while F and G bonds mature in 12 years and are favored by large investors If redemptions rise the Treasury would run an educational campaign to encourage holding bonds longer.
A strong Allied air force attacked the French coast near Boulogne from the Dover Strait shortly before dusk. Planes roared out under low clouds with heavy shooting reported as they strafed targets along the coast.
