Amarillo Chamber of Commerce to host its annual banquet with about 100 guests from the Soil Conservation Service and Farm Security Administration region. Clinton M. Hester will be the principal speaker on the national defense program as tickets sell for 1 dollar each.
The first group of conscientious objectors will be called within 30 days for a year of service in non-army camps. They will be assigned to abandoned Civilian Conservation Corps camps to work on soil conservation and forestry under government supervision. Traffic on Polk Street Amarillo is regulated by signals but reflector stop signs will be installed at intersections along Polk and Third Avenue. State highway officials cite night visibility and backup when signals fail as reasons. Sid Harper notes the signs will enforce STOP once up, replacing rubber pavement flaps.
Charlie Pryor, manager of the Amarillo Hotel, after an operation weeks ago, is able to be up and about and will be back on the job Thursday. He says he is feeling fine though not as energetic as usual.
Berlin dispatch reports the official news agency acknowledges German authorities in Poland were placing Polish businesses under German control after the conquest. The piece notes the move followed Poland’s fall and says many firms’ owners had fled the country leaving employees without bread.
Mrs. E. M. Stallworth widow of pioneer rancher E. M. Stallworth died at her son R. D. Stallworth’s home in Amarillo after a long Mon tague County lineage. Survived by two sons J. J. Stallworth and L. T. Stallworth a daughter Mrs. C. A. Eichelberger a sister Mrs. H. B. Caddel and four grandchildren. Body in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Chapel to be sent to Forestburg for burial beside her husband. arrangements pending.

Singapore January 14 heavy losses to French Indochina in men and material were reported by the Thai consulate. In the northeast sector Thai forces with air support advanced and attacked the enemy retreated. In the eastern sector the enemy retreated leaving many dead and arms and ammunition abandoned as Thai forces occupied the positions and pursued.
KENIL New Jersey January 14 fire destroyed a building used to manufacture fuse compound at Hercules Powder Company plant. Three men were injured. Company spokesman said damage was slight.
FBI Dallas special agent in charge Paul Kitchin has notified all enforcement officers of a 7 o clock meeting tonight in the federal building Amarillo. The session will cover matters affecting national defense and was sent to the sheriff and the police chief.
The Federal Credit Union of the Veterans Administration Facility held its first annual meeting on Monday. Dr. O. E. Herndon urged employees to seize opportunities, with officers elected: Phil Davis president Harry Fredericks vice president Debora Kunert secretary Grace Pitsch treasurer. Credit committee includes Dr. John G. Hood Dr. Wm D. Whitehead W. R. Rosche Supervisory committee trustees Judd H. Kirkham Joseph Lawler James Flowers John S. McCall elected to the board of directors.
Funeral services for 81 year old William Henry Brown of Moore County will be held tomorrow at 10:30 AM from Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church. Bishop E C Seaman and Rev F A Foster will officiate with pallbearers named. He is survived by two sons Alfred Brown and Bert Brown and a daughter Mrs Anton Zimmer. Burial follows beside his wife in Silverton.
Vichy France January 14 Two shepherds and their flocks of more than 800 sheep were found frozen to death today near Arles on the Rhone River in the coldest winter weather. The Loire River rose over six feet due to an ice jam near its mouth, threatening a dyke and isolating an Alpine village after five avalanches.

Edmond Parrish, an employee of J. Crouch Grain Company, suffered a broken leg in a fall at Burrus Elevator early today. He was taken by N. S. Griggs and Sons ambulance to St. Anthony's Hospital, where attendants reported his condition satisfactory. Home address given as 1803 North Arthur.
