A U.S. labor report states over 2 million wage earners were restored to private industry jobs from November 1935 to November 1936. Gains were strongest in heavy industries, with slower progress in consumer goods makers. Relief rolls persistently decline, but hiring for those on relief remains slow.
Russell Thorp secretary of the Wyoming Stock Grower's Association urged uniform theft laws and state cooperation to curb cattle thefts. He noted organized gangs and said modern rustlers steal one or two cattle at night, often moving them across states with many ending up in California.
Federal Judge David J. Davis ruled the Federal Security Act constitutional and dismissed two suits by over 200 Alabama firms seeking relief from tax collections under the act. The Alabama state act was invalidated earlier, with funds held in escrow pending appeal. Forney Johnston said the decision would be appealed to the circuit court in New Orleans.
Judge R Walker Hall of the Seventh District Court of Civil Appeals was reappointed for a six year term on the Texas Civil Judicial Council by Gov James V Alfred. Hall has served on the council since 1929 and the body studies civil court rules to recommend cost saving and speed improvements to the legislature.
Federal agents examined a blood stained tire chain found with a stolen car in Everett near the Tacoma area where 10 year old Charles Mattson was found. Tests showed human blood on the chain and car stains, but confirmation of it being the boy’s blood was not disclosed.
In Austin on January 14 the Texas House heard Rep. B. F. Cathey claim thousands of aged Texans starve while old age assistance officials do nothing. His resolution urged county commissioners to help enroll deserving people, signaling a forthcoming pension reform clash in the new Forty-fifth Legislature.
