In Maryville Missouri on January 12 a mob chained Raymond Gunn to the Garrett Rural School roof after al legedly assaulting and murdering Velma Colter the 19 year old teacher. Gunn reportedly confessed as the crowd incinerated the building with him on the roof and his fate sealed by a flaming pyre. The mob numbered about 2000 and no resistance occurred as law officers stood by. The incident prompted mobilization plans by the Missouri National Guard amid fears of further unrest.
