Charles Bischoff aged 45 confessed to the killing of 6 year old Marian McLean whose mutilated body was found in the basement of his tenement. The crime was discovered five days after Marian disappeared and Bischoff surrendered after a police ruse.
President George Ordway of the school board outlines corrections to Amarillo schools. He urges combining tax offices, retaining a business manager, adjusting athletic salaries, and shifting to a pay as you go building plan to avoid bonds. He calls for public input and longer board terms.
Potter County commissioners convene at 2 p.m. for the first regular session in the new courthouse. Plans for the opening next Monday January 18 will be discussed with County Judge Sam B. Motlow. Other matters will be routine.
Winter thawed in the Panhandle as sun returned and temperatures rose. A Rocky Mountain storm brought five inches of snow near Dalhart and Texline, with Amarillo seeing flurries and a 23 to 31 degree swing. Transport slowed. buses canceled, trains delayed, and air service paused but planned to resume.
James E. Chapple, 55, cashier for the Arkansas Gazette, died from wounds after a payroll robbery try. Charles and Don Pearce were charged with first degree murder. Charles confessed and guided officers to a hidden stash of over $4,600. Don Pearce denied involvement.

Denison-Durant free bridge across Red River, opened by Oklahoma guardsmen last summer, may be closed by court order. Red River Bridge Company argues courts can order a nine month closure as an alternative to a cash judgment against Texas. Dispute dates to 1928 and has involved six courts in Texas Oklahoma and Kansas.

A masked bandit robbed a young Amarillo couple Sunday night as they rode in a car on South Hayden Street. He stole two diamond rings valued over 200 dollars a watch other jewelry and five dollars. Miss Anne Daniels 608 Harrison Street reported the loss of rings and jewelry while Il W Cook 3704 South Taylor Street said he lost the five dollars. The suspect accosted them on the running board after Cook lit a cigarette. Daniels said she was not sure the robber was armed but she fought to keep her purse which contained seven dollars. Only one burglary was reported later at the Piegly Wiggly store 1832 Taylor Street where tobacco and cigars were taken.
President Hoover convened a hurried conference at the White House with Senators Glass and Walcott and other financial officials to discuss the 2 billion dollar reconstruction finance corporation bill amid questions over amendments. Glass indicated he would not reveal details but noted difficulties the president asked them to help iron out.
The Senate directed Attorney General Mitchell to investigate conditions in Hawaii and report on enforcement of criminal laws, with a map of possible changes to the organic act. The move followed Honolulu news and was approved without opposition as McKellar urged a wider inquiry and naval officials pledged information for House hearings.

In Bombay on January 11 Mrs. M. K. Gandhi wife of Mahatma Gandhi and Miss Patel were arrested. Nationalist brokers halted cotton seed and bullion markets pending Gandhi's release from Poona prison. Mrs Gandhi faces arrest for backing Bardoli tax resistance.
Major-General Edwin E. Booth, commanding the first cavalry division at El Paso, Texas, was reassigned by the War Department to command the Philippine Department of the Army. He will succeed Major General John L. Hines, who is ordered to Washington for duty in the office of the chief of staff and is nearing retirement.
In Naples authorities seized three packages from the steamer Excalibur believed to contain bombs addressed to King Victor Emmanuel and Premier Mussolini. The 125 parcel mail sacks were unloaded after passengers disembarked and taken to a remote spot for inspection by explosives experts. News reached Marseilles via radio from New York after the ship sailed. New York officials learned too late to intercept.
Shanghai reports indicate China plans to sever diplomatic relations with Japan soon with Tokyo affairs to be handled through German and American embassies. A separate dispatch notes calls for permanent neutralization of Manchuria. Stimson announced U.S. acceptance of Japan’s program as compensation for the Culver B. Chamberlain incident.
Delegations from Amarillo Plainview Canyon and Tulsa plan to attend the annual chamber of commerce banquet at Happy tonight at 7 30. Amarillo party includes Bill Lampe Avery Rush N B Griges Bob Underwood Gene Howe A B Johnson Henry Ansley. T C Thompson leads Canyon. Happy president John E Toles anticipates record attendance and notes highways are in fair condition.
Threatening weather failed to deter shoppers as hundreds joined Downtown Day activities in Amarillo. Free bus rides to the business district helped sustain crowds from 9 to 11 as bargain hunting continued. This marks the third Downtown Day event in six months.
United Press reports at the 32nd annual auto show in New York that 1932 models offer many self operating features including start by ignition heat control, ride adjustment, and free wheeling. Ford abstains from the display, plans a later model release.
Mrs. Jessie N. Ross county probation officer issues pleas for discarded clothing and quilt scraps for a charity employment program in Amarillo. Needy women will be paid 10 cents an hour from county funds to work on clothing for charity and on quilts for sale. Mrs. Foss asks residents to call at the new courthouse with home work for women to be recommended from her lists.
Major General John A. Hulen, chairing a funds committee, reports postponement of foreclosures on a mortgage held by Wichita Falls bank on Colonel Charles C. Goodnight’s buffalo herd. The group seeks to raise funds to buy land for a buffalo preserve with state backing. The bank offers a delay while the committee pursues land and preservation plans amid limited contributions.
Fire of undetermined origin broke out Sunday night in a clothes closet at the W. F. Moreman home 2915 Wichita Street. Flames were seen from the roof while the couple attended a show. The incident caused 150 dollars of damage. the house and contents are insured. Moreman is office manager for Waples Platter Grocery Company.
Honolulu reports describe a city split between white and native factions amid murder trials. Massie and others plead civil trial while four accused remain aboard a warship for protection. Police guard the city as riots loom and Kahahawai is buried amid national tension.
