FDR To Submit New War Budget

President Roosevelt is expected to submit to Congress on Monday a war budget of at least 100 billion dollars. House members demand item by item justification. Burdick proposes restoring purse strings to Congress as oversight tightens. Since 1933 spending reaches 142.2 billion with receipts about 61.6 billion, debt rises by roughly 90 billion.

10000 Doctors to Get Calls for Relocation in 1943

The War Manpower Commission disclosed that 10000 more physicians would be drafted for military service in 1943, leaving over 80000 civilian doctors. Dr Frank H Leahy said 80000 active civilian physicians are enough if well distributed and civilians stay healthy. Over 400 physicians are already relocated and more may volunteer.

Great Strides by Oil Chemists

Elmer Johnson of the University of Texas says chemists are learning from cotton and oil experiments. New fuels may deliver more power than 100 octane gasoline, with rapid advances likely to outdate September motor oil by October. FDR Urges Police to Aid FBI in Subversive Case Effort

President Roosevelt repeats Sept. 6 1939 request that local police sheriffs and other officers promptly hand over any information on espionage sabotage and related acts to the nearest FBI representative. He notes the FBI's role in investigating subversive matters and urges patriotic organizations and individuals to report similar information. He expresses confidence in continued law enforcement cooperation for internal safety.

Deferment List for War Services Issued by Selective Service

Washington lists 34 essential occupations in repair and hand trade services and 30 in health and welfare plus 15 in technical and management services to guide local boards. The bureau stresses these are guides not blanket deferments and boards must deem each registrant essential. In San Antonio, 30 striking plumbers are warned to return to work at Duncan Field hospital or lose OC gasoline cards. Pack your scrap metal for the war effort.
