Washington report says 1938 retail sales reached 35.3 billion dollars a 12 percent drop from 1937 marking the first decline since 1933. All major groups felt the recession with only two of fifteen showing above average losses as the automotive and furniture sectors led declines.
The National Labor Relations Board was granted Supreme Court review of its claim to jurisdiction over Somerset Manufacturing Company of Somerville New Jersey. The Board seeks to apply the Labor Relations Act though Philadelphia federal court found no interstate commerce involvement. Decisions on Tennessee Valley Authority Act constitutionality and state ratification of a constitutional amendment to abolish child labor were postponed at least until next Monday.

Dr Flamm, longtime Northwest Texas Hospital and St Anthony's Hospital staffer, served on the Northwest Texas Hospital board and the church board at Central Presbyterian. He studied in Vienna in 1924 and earned a Vienna Society certificate in 1982, was active in the Liong Club Rotary Chi and Amarillo Elks, and belonged to Phi Rho Sigma. He is survived by his wife Mattie and two sons Harold and Kenneth, with other relatives named in the notice.
Maria Kramer was named president of the Hotel Edison Corporation in New York, overseeing a $12,000,000 hotel empire. She also runs the Hotel Lincoln, which she bought last spring, and her holdings reportedly include capital of $12,000,000. She succeeds her husband Max as Edison president and is credited with reviving the Lincoln from red ink in recent six months.
H S Hilburn of Plainviews president of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce and D A Bandeen of Abilene will speak at a freight rate conference next Monday in Waco. Farmers, Consumers' Group, Women's Clubs and Chambers of Commerce are invited to send representatives to discuss handicaps from high transportation rates in the Southwest.
Wayne Sabin of Los Angeles captured the singles title at the 11th annual Dixie tennis tournament in Tampa Florida after defeating Bryan M Grant of Atlanta 6-3 6-1 6-1. Mako and Tidball of Los Angeles won the doubles crown 7-5 6-2 6-4 over Grant and Sabin.
TWA announced the purchase of three Douglas Sky Club planes to expand service after the San Francisco Exhibition and New York World's Fair. The $350,000 order adds to a fleet of 36, with new Curtiss-Wright Cyclone motors and 195 mph cruising speed. Cities to benefit include Philadelphia Harrisburg San Francisco Los Angeles Kansas City Chicago and New York City.
In Detroit on January 9 a vagrancy case brought John Doe before Judge Thomas Cotter. The shabbily dressed man explained his parents died young and orphan officials labeled him John Doe, a name he has carried for 48 years.
Julius Streicher in Nuremberg vows to shut down cabarets. He will arrest or remove any artist who jokes about the Nazi party or officials, promising to close the venues involved in Franconia during the New Year address.
The American Bar Association committee on labor unemployment and social security condemned sit-down strikes as illegal and asked its house of delegates to outlaw them. Judge William Ransom of New York chaired and announced a resolution denouncing Nazi persecutions, urging adoption to counter extremist sentiment.
