Second study of the city's rebuilt building code began last night led by Macon O Carder. Lord Woolton disclosed that Britain failed to meet the meat ration last week. He framed the issue at a luncheon, asking Britons whether they preferred less meat for a week or two or to save Bardia, citing shipping diversions to Libya as the reason.
Los Angeles report says Ralph Rosenbaum, an auctioneer, was robbed by a man who demanded money. Rosenbaum claimed he offered a dime in exchange for mercy, and the robber fled after handing over two dimes.
New York early today Richard Sprey heard Polly the parrot cry for help and Chan the chow bark, alerting him to a fire next door. Firemen arrived and extinguished the blaze. In Rusk Texas Charlie Corbin, 7, son of Douglas Corbin, died when a tree fell on him.
R H Holt, 30, faced swindling charges for soliciting funds from old age pensioners by claiming ties to the old age assistance office and promising higher pension payments. He had prior conviction in Pampa, fined $200. An Amarillo pensioner who lost $2 identified Holt with sheriff’s help after a visit to Pampa.
A Concord New Hampshire man Carl Farnham receives a prank call that says a girlfriend drove with another man and had an accident. The caller explains she is dialing every Carl in the phone book, then apologizes after realizing the mix up. The exchange ends with a random confirmation and a goodbye.
Wade Brymer of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce says there are hopes to improve the Sherman gap between Stratford and the Oklahoma line. The state highway commission will not hear the proposed plan again in a Monday Austin hearing. It is No. 287 the Yellowstone Park highway to the Gulf with a Denver cut-off.
The city commission discusses an ordinance that would impose a fee for sewer gas and water connections. It will reconvene at 10 am to review bids on a contract to supply 3,000 feet of fire hose. The panel also handled routine business in its first session since December 17.
Speaker Rayburn said progress is being made on a plan to expand aid to Britain after a conference with Hull and Morgenthau. Wheeler indicated a $10,000,000,000 armament program is under study as lawmakers consider similar timing in the House and Senate. Rayburn expects minimal delay.
A visiting stranger in Bristol on January 8 asked for beans on the house. Counterman James Parsons, finding no beans, gave a bowl of soup instead. The man protested and left into the cold, insisting he wanted beans.

Members of the Maria Class of First Baptist Church will gather at 2 30 tomorrow afternoon at the residence of Mrs Glenn Lackey at 2912 West Second Avenue for a meeting.
Amarillo High School today received several hundred pairs of noiseless rubbed-tire roller skates funded by the student activity fund. The skates, same type as Amarillo College purchase, will be used for skating parties and later by physical education classes. first party is set for tomorrow from 5:30 to 7:00 PM and a small usage fee will cover costs.
Floyd William Hanson faces a Monday robbery by assault charge for the beating and robbing of Doc Davis Saturday night. A federal complaint accuses him of giving false information on his Selective Service registration. Deputy Marshal Lampe said custody would be sought after state charges resolve, and draft board officials had trouble contacting him due to his registered address.
Police traffic chief Sid Harper announced new stop signs are enforceable as installed. The first batch goes in at Tenth Avenue and Georgia Street after tests on Jackson and Monroe Street. signs include reflectors for night visibility.
Mrs. C. L. Carson longtime Canyon resident died yesterday at her Childress home. Her daughters Mrs. L. F. E. Kelley of Fort Worth and Mrs. Sim Castleberry of Childress attend the funeral. Funeral services set for 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon in Childress.
The three year army enlistment period remains popular as Sgt. R. A. Jackson at the Amarillo recruiting station reports shipping 31 men this month. New enlistees include Elmer L. Gunn Jr of Hardesty Oklahoma in the air corps in Puerto Rico and Wilbur L. Gribble of Guymon Oklahoma, in the air corps at Fort Sill.
Officials from Castro Briscoe and Potter counties discussed a regional federal food stamp plan to allow all counties to offer stamps. They noted affordability concerns but believed a joint proposal could enable broader access while Amarillo distributes surplus commodities. A meeting with federal officials was planned.
The Deaf Smith Scout District of the Boy Scouts of America held its annual district meeting at a Hereford parochial school. The report shows growth from one troop of 32 boys and seven Scouters to three troops with 73 Scouts and 19 additional Scouts, plus a Cub Pack of 16 boys, with Amarillo attendees including Lon D. Edwards, Bob J. Johnson, John McKnight, and Will J. Hiatt.
Mrs. Sarah Telitha Shannon of Amarillo died at 9:40 this morning in a local hospital after about a week of illness. She leaves husband R. L. Shannon, two sons J. C. Shannon and J. L. Shannon, three daughters Alta Utley Reena Snyder and Geneva Boyle, 20 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral to be held tomorrow at 2:30 pm Boxwell Brothers Chapel with Rev Roy B Filipo officiating. Pallbearers listed and Llano Cemetery burial planned.
Dr. O. E. Herndon expressed appreciation to the American Legion post in Amarillo for support of the Veterans Administration facility. Legion Home hosted a large meeting led by commander John K. Boyce with Wes Izzard as speaker on the European war. Bill Gilstrap reported on the 1941 membership campaign.
Potter County Draft Board No 2 is seeking R. J. Wilson. A questionnaire mailed to 808 Williams Street was returned. With only five days left to respond, the registrant bears the responsibility to provide contact updates so the board can reach him.
Amarillo Junior Chamber of Commerce held a noon program on war mysteries with Wes Gardner KGNC commentator leading. Izzard spoke on Russian influence in Europe and Elaria in the Balkans while German shipping, concentration, and a US blitzkrieg training near Cuba were discussed. The group announced the annual installation of officers for Friday evening January 17 at the Herring Hotel. A Jaycee delegation will attend the Pampa installation banquet Monday with Bert Levy serving as toastmaster.
Amarillo building activity opens slowly with daily permit values under $5,000. Notable permits include C. W. O. for a $5,000 six room brick on 1710 Monroe Street, L. Morgan for a $3,000 four room house on 817 Virginia, McMurtry for a $3,500 four frame on 2909 Jackson, and A. R. Renfroe for a five room frame on Clover Drive.
A fire at 602 North Buren Street destroyed the roof of a vacant house. Firemen were alerted at 5 20 and remained on scene about an hour.
