President Truman urged Congress to impose compulsory arbitration against unjustified strikes and to curb monopoly while defending a balanced budget with a small surplus. He backed extending wartime taxes, labor reform, and expanded social welfare, and urged unity on security, immigration, and health care programs. He called for mediation and final arbitration to resolve contract disputes and promoted labor management harmony. He spoke at a joint session in Washington.

Gov elect Beauford Jester tentatively accepts invitation to speak at Amarillo Chamber of Commerce annual banquet on April 18. Rex Baxter chamber secretary manager says acceptance was received this morning after invitation extended December 23 of last year.
The speaker offers a tentative acceptance of the invitation noting dependences on upcoming legislative matters. Pinkey Vineyard, chamber president, will announce a committee on January 17 to handle banquet plans with parties including Neely Greenhill Lowndes Insurance and E A Regal Co Real estate and loans involved.
Washington Jan 6 U P Republican senators bill would curb long winded debate by allowing cloture on a simple majority and limit speech to three hours per senator after majority vote. The move follows filibuster over seating Theodore Bilbo and signals GOP aims on poll tax and anti discrimination legislation.
Field Marshal Montgomery departed for a six day visit to Moscow as the guest of Marshal Alexander M. Vasilevsky, formerly chief of staff of the Soviet army and now supreme commander of the Russian forces in the Far East.

The War Department announced Lt. Gen. Lucius D. Clay will be the new commanding general of United States forces in Europe, succeeding Gen. Joseph T. McNarney who moves to the United Nations military staff. Gen. Mark W. Clark becomes Sixth Army commander based in San Francisco and will serve as commander in chief of U.S. forces in Austria. Lt. Gen. Geoffrey Keyes will become Clark’s deputy in Austria around Jan. 10, with Keyes set to succeed Clark after his departure. Clay will also become commander in chief of U.S. forces of occupation in Germany, succeeding McNarney.
Funeral services for John Lang Sinclair, 67, longtime New York resident and former Bexar County dairy farmer who wrote the UT song The Eyes of Texas, will be held in San Antonio Wednesday morning. Sinclair, born in Scotland, died in New York City Saturday.
A Harlem tenement fire started in a dumb-waiter shaft early today killing four people and injuring eight. All victims were Black. seven of the injured are in serious condition. The blaze gutted the fifth floor and parts of the fourth around the shaft.
Potter County commissioners appoint Dr Don Marsalis and John Peterson to Northwest Texas Hospital board replacing Dr Guy Owens and Dr B M Puckett. Harry Daily reelected director. Jason Robberson C T Crowe and Ross Logan holdovers. Board now four laymen and two doctors. Johnnie Jones of Seagraves asked to prepare a zoo lease contract for next meeting.
Bill Day of Fillmore wins the News Tip Contest first prize of five dollars for being the first to report a fatal Canyon Hill accident on Tuesday. George Lokey receives three dollars for a tip about a dog guarding a sled, and Ivan Tucker earns two dollars for detailing a San Jacinto fire late Tuesday night.
