Brantley town marshal John Lord and deputy Walker Thomas were charged with murder over the death of Oscar Brooks age 45. They admitted firing when Brooks tried to stop the removal of whisky from his home. Brooks lay slain after thirteen bullets. the officers left the scene and returned to Brantley.
