Publicity suit shows Chaplin’s star marketing flair
In London a Westminster County Court settlement between Chaplin and former secretary Miss May Shepherd revealed how Chaplin’s European tour for City Lights was a calculated publicity drive. She testified the actor staged visits to his old school and the Old Bailey, while Premier Ramsay MacDonald was invited to a dinner Chaplin left London for Berlin before. The judge admonished courtroom procedure as Chaplin urged peace with the Prime Minister after the case. Alistar Mac Donald, Ramsay MacDonald’s son, attended as an interested spectator.
