Detroit January 1 The first woman under the habitual criminal law faces a life term after a thirteen minute trial. Etta Mae Miller mother of ten children was convicted of four liquor felonies and sentenced immediately. Her lawyers plan an appeal to the state supreme court arguing the retroactivity of the revised criminal code.
Police raid blocks festive New Year scene as Grover Whalen's squad and federal agents sweep 33 night clubs and speakeasies. By 1 am streets fill with costumed crowds fleeing high cover charges and loud celebrations.
Franklin D. Roosevelt was sworn in as governor of New York as a Democrat succeeding Theodore Roosevelt’s Republican tenure. Alfred E. Smith retires after four terms, with plans undisclosed. The oath took effect at midnight to prevent a gubernatorial vacancy.

Charley Shepherd a 24 year old black convict was burned to death by a mob after seven hours of mercy at a prison farm murder and abduction case. He confessed taking blame for the crimes and absolved two bunk mates. His final act was an attempted escape as vehicles halted near the funeral pyre.
