In Austin on February 27 AP reports Gov. for the day Grady Hazlewood, Amarillo senator acting lieutenant governor, assumed the role as Allan Shivers traveled to Reynosa Mexico. Hazlewood joked about cleanups, then noted a state shortage of honorary colonel commission blanks, sending a Senate message.

Mavericks Start Work On New Home In Amarillo

Ground was broken today for a larger Maverick Boys Club at 2100 2200 South Lincoln by Mayor Gene Klein. He praised the American Business Club sponsor, noting the program as among the nation’s best. Attending were club leaders, County Judge Gene Jordan, and others, with plans to expand due to space limits and a shift of the surrounding area toward industrial use.

The Pioneer Dale, an 8000 ton United States Lines freighter, was bombed and strafed off Tsingtao, China. Captain James F. Knowlton reported one minor casualty and that the ship, described as a new fast freighter, was proceeding seaward awaiting orders. It was ordered to Japan for return.

Leopard sightings prompt hunt crews from Colorado

Weather across the state remains partly cloudy with scattered showers and snow flurries in higher elevations. In a separate report, two Colorado hunter-trappers arrived to assist the Lincoln Path Zoo search for the 175-pound leopard last seen near the zoo. They brought dogs to track the elusive animal but the scent proved elusive as the hunt moved into a burned grassy area northeast of the zoo.

Nurse testifies on air injections in Sander murder case

Nurse Elizabeth Rose testified in Manchester that Dr. Herman N. Sander used an empty syringe to inject air into dying patient Abbie Borrato. She said Sander stated that air in the veins would act like an embolus and gasps were heard as the needle pierced the arm.

Public housing backers seek 600 units in Amarillo

The Amarillo Housing Authority Board passed a resolution to seek city commission authorization to apply for 600 government sponsored public housing units. If the commission refuses, a referendum may be held. The board expects a survey to determine actual needs, with initial application for 600 units to the Federal Public Housing Administration.

Mayor Urges Voters to Back Bond Sale in Amarillo

Mayor Gene Klein urged Amarillo property owners to vote in the election. He said high turnout would aid the bond sale if approved and could reduce interest costs. Eberstadt Funeral Services Held in Jefferson Texas

Funeral services for A. Eberstadt aged 79 were held at 4 pm in Jefferson Texas with burial in Jefferson Cemetery. The body arrived in Jefferson last night and the Blackburn Shaw Funeral Home of Hughes assisted. A native of Germany he was born April 8 1870. He had been in ill health since August after a stay at Memorial Hospital New York City.
