Leopold II, age 32, was proclaimed king of Belgium after swearing to defend the constitution before parliament. He rode from the royal castle at Laeken to the Chamber of Deputies amid jubilant crowds and diplomatic attendance, pledging a steady rule as thousands cheered Vive le Roi.
Gray County grand jury indicts Rev. Lewis H. Shockley on four counts for poisonings in Mc Lean Texas three years ago. Indictments allege poisoning flour killed Mrs. Terry Erwin and tied to deaths of W T Hudgins Terry Erwin and others. Arraignment planned. Shockley previously held on separate indictment.
Governor Miriam A. Ferguson halts the planned electrocution of Paul Mitchell of Amarillo, commuting the death verdict to life imprisonment. Mitchell, 20, pleaded guilty in Lubbock County for a robbery with firearms in which Bob Tharp was killed.
Army Air Mail operations move toward an on schedule basis after three days of control. Bad weather hindered pilots while Newark Cleveland and Boston hubs worked to clear storm damage and resume service. Five fatalities marred the effort but mail generally moved through as crews at multiple cities labored to set up the nationwide system. Pilot Norman Burnett bailed out near Fremont Ohio suffering a leg injury.
Cloudy conditions with possible rain or snow tonight and Saturday. In West Texas expect rain in the southwest and rain or snow in the north, with clearer Saturday in the north and rain in the south. New Mexico remains unsettled with occasional rain, slightly warmer in the extreme northeast. Temperature extremes up to 1 o clock range from 25 to 37.
Managua, Nicaragua, Feb. 23. General Augustino Sandino, former rebel leader, was assassinated by political enemies feared for his ambition and perceived leaning toward Communism. President Sacasa denounced the murderers and hosted Sandino’s father Gregorio at the palace. The event drew little upheaval, with five other men killed and a child fatally shot by accident.
Amarillo Rotarians honored their ladies as members of the club at a dine and dance night at the Amarillo Country Club. A Washington's birthday program featured Frank M. Ryburn of Dallas as principal speaker on Washington’s life and service. About 200 people attended.
Chicago February trial update shows Dr. Alice Lindsay Wynekoop denying fresh recollection of events after her daughter in law Rheta Gardner Wynekoop’s body was found on an operating table in the family mansion. The 63 year old defendant described feeling weak and spending the day in bed as proceedings begin anew.
A regional relief rally urged creation of a federal drought authority to aid the Panhandle drouth area. The resolution argues drought relief should not be blocked by state national agency disputes and copies were sent to top officials and legislators. Demobilization of CWA in Potter County began today.
Houston announces its fat stock show will run February 24 through March 4, drawing animals from national and international champions. Entry numbers before opening more than triple last year's total. In Nebraska, Charles W. Bryan declares his bid for the U S Senate on the Democratic ticket.
Thomas Lee Suttle, 36, who promised riches for promoters, was sentenced by Federal Judge James C. Wilson to three years in Leavenworth and a suspended five year term on a second post office burglary charge. He pleaded guilty, explaining his motive, and surrendered to Justice officials to face the charges.
Hereford and Farwell won to reach the District 1 Interscholastic League basketball second round at Amarillo College Gym. Happy Jackss had a bye as Dalhart did not appear. Stratford Sunnyside Hartley and Dumas had byes earlier.
In Chicago on February 23, a jury convicted Roger Touhy and two accomplices Albert Kator and Gustav Schaefer for abducting John Factor known as Jake the Barber. Each man received a 99 year prison sentence, marking the end of a feared illicit gang era in prohibition Chicago.

The federal government announced a $5,000,000 program to buy grain and livestock for drought areas in the West. Harry L. Hopkins named Carl Giles Oklahoma relief administrator, relieving Governor Murray of duties and prompting Murray to resign from federal relief responsibilities. Grain purchases will be made by state relief administrations with allotments announced.
Washington February 23 The House Ways and Means Committee tentatively decided against immediate reconsideration of the 2.4 billion Soldiers' Bonus Bill. The panel removed a major threat to a House vote on March 12 under the petition rule.
The Rev. Peter Ainslie, noted for church unity and world friendship through the churches, died early today in Baltimore after two operations since January 7. He was 66 years old.
A charity baby show at the Municipal Auditorium Saturday morning will raise all proceeds for Shirley Ann Grounds. Admission is 10 cents, show starts at 10, and Amarillo police will usher and sell tickets. The event is part of a three night series with boxing, vaudeville, a beauty revue, and a dance to follow Saturday night.
