Arthur Brisbane lauds the Yaqui valley in Ciudad Obregon, noting Cajeme’s legacy, diverse settlers, and a booming rice and wheat cycle. Describes irrigation potential, large-scale tomato and green pea shipping, and rapid population growth from a rail siding to a 12,000 community and 120,000 acres irrigated.
The Senate adopted the Muscle Shoals conference report without debate, sending the bill to President Hoover after House approval. It authorizes government operation of $150,000,000 power and nitrate plants on the Tennessee River in Alabama and construction of transmission lines with municipal sales priority. The White House has said Hoover has not yet seen the agreement.
Four men died and three were injured after a high pressure still exploded at Gulf Refinery in Port Arthur last night. The blast at 11 47 p m was heard across the area. Victims include Joseph E Whittington 38 and three others identified as Luke Broom Henry Elbert and Vincent Allen. Allen and Elbert were fatally struck instantly with Whittington and Broom dying today. First aid treated minor injuries at the Gulf Plant s first aid room.
In Washington on February 23, burglars have targeted state department officials. Secretary Stimson previously chased a robber from his home. Assistant Secretary William R. Castle woke to a strange man in his bedroom early today, breaking a glass on the first floor before the intruder fled down the stairs.
Washington February 25 All embargo and tariff bills including a proposed oil import limit were rejected by the House Ways and Means Committee. Hawley said no public vote on the oil cap and the committee postponed action on the embargo and Russian product ban. the session recessed with an 18 to 7 vote on the postponement.
Bids to furnish large quantities of materials for the North Fillmore Street subway will be opened Tuesday, March 3, by the city commission. Advertisements for sealed proposals were prepared Monday at city hall. The list includes seven thousand barrels of cement, 2100 cubic yards of sand, 4180 cubic yards of gravel, 275 tons of reinforcing steel, over 600 feet of tile sewer pipe, and 1600 cubic yards of other needed materials.
In a Brooklyn dance hall clash between the Hool igans from Red Hook and the Hudson Avenue Boys an Italian faction, one man died and another was critically wounded. 60 people were detained. Police linked the violence to a dispute during the orchestra’s performance of Home Sweet Home as women fled the chaotic floor. The dead man was Charles Barnes, 24, a chauffeur. Michael Maselli, 26, was wounded as a police officer said he reached for a hip pocket.
The Wickersham Commission assured the Senate that omitted prohibition data on about six states would be forwarded. Remaining reports among the 32 states covered last week include New York and Illinois, with inadvertent omissions cited. A commissioner noted internal dissatisfaction over data selection without full commission approval. President Hoover marked Washington’s 199th birthday with divine services in Alexandria.
Metropolitan opera stars join a new weekly CBS feature on WABC and chain starting March 2 at 7 30 p m with Beniamino Gigli as soloist conducting by Wilfred Pelle tier. The coast to coast hookup will reach 50 stations with a different star each week. Specials this week include Otto Gray and his Oklahoma Cowboy band and Grace Hayes. Nat Halperin joins the radio roundup.
John Lord O Brian, first assistant attorney general, was quoted criticizing Mussolini over wage cuts. Speaking to the Union League Club of Brooklyn, he contrasted Italy with the United States and noted Italy’s government cut salaries by 10 percent, later extended to private workers. He said his remarks were not aimed at Italy or its rulers.
In Austin on February 28 the Texas House engrossed Representative McGill of El Paso’s bill allowing ten jurors to agree in civil verdicts. The vote was 59 to 49 after an earlier voting-machine error misreported an amendment by Pope of Corpus Christi. McGill argued the change would speed justice and reduce mistrials while Pollard urged lobbyist registration. The Senate tabled Poage’s resolution criticizing highway department reports as costly yearbooks.
Officials meet at the Chamber of Commerce to discuss hard surfacing and improvements on U S Highway 66 from Amarillo to Tucumcari New Mexico. Funds are available with a goal to complete the Tucumcari east to the Texas line within the year and connect with New Mexico and Oklahoma via county paving or all weather routes within 12 months. The Santa Rosa Laguna cut off is noted as a major point of interest for Highway 66 supporters.
Investigation into the Levine Department store burglary found no clues. About $1,200 in cash and $800 to $900 in checks were taken after burglars broke a skylight and entered at about 3 AM. A rope from the Johnson building roof was used, and burglary tools lay beside the safe.
Delegates were chosen today to represent Panhandle landowners and gas producers in Austin on Wednesday when the proposed 2 cent gas tax bill is set for a public hearing. Landowners and gas interests, in a mass meeting in Amarillo last Friday, voted to send a large delegation to the hearing.
Dame Nellie Melba, famed soprano of grand opera, died at 71 in a Sydney hospital after a skin illness worsened by a European journey and Australian summer heat. She spent her final hours in Melbourne near birthplace and stage name origin, following weeks bedridden and a voyage from Europe.
Irene Schroeder and Walter Glenn Dague faced the electric chair at Rockview penitentiary Bellefonte Pa at dawn. Schroeder the first woman executed in the state for the killing of a highway patrolman was 22 and wore a gray dress and stockings. Dague sat with steady stride and was pronounced dead five minutes after Schroeder. Both refused life imprisonment and asked their counsel not to appeal.
In Florence Arizona, 14 convicts escaped the state penitentiary by climbing a 20 foot wall with a steel girder aid. Fifteen men participated, one Mexican serving life for murder was quickly captured. Nine escapees were Mexican, two were Black, with authorities seeking potential accomplices. In Joliet Illinois, three Chicagoans died in a separate breakout after rifle and machine gun fire as guards ambushed inmates near the old prison wall. The dead were Joseph Norkiewicz 30 Julio Chileno 39 and Alvin Kilman Jr. 28.
West Texas shows partly cloudy skies tonight and Tuesday with cooler readings in the southeast tonight. Oklahoma expects cloudy unsettled conditions tonight and Tuesday with generally fair weather later.
