Truman Seeks Early End to State of National Emergency

President Truman asked Congress to repeal most emergency statutes and extend only a limited set. He urged ending the wartime controls as reconversion progresses, with many acts expiring or rolling off by mid-1948 if extended. Markets will close Saturday for Washington's Birthday observance.

Wilson Sets Hearings On Portal Pay Suits

Preliminary hearings in four portal to portal pay suits will be held Monday in Federal Court here. The cases involve Shamrock Oil and Gas Company Columbian Carbon Company Continental Carbon Company and the American Zinc Company. The suits claim pay for wash up time checking tools making reports and other required activities as part of work. Lawyers John Merchant and Gene Jordan Amarillo represent the employees. Judge Wilson will hear criminal cases Friday in Amarillo and set other matters for hearing.

Brownwood power disrupted by ditch digging mishap

Brownwood authorities restored basic phone service after a ditch digging machine cut into two 400 pair cables, knocking out 800 lines and forcing emergency lines to support police and fire departments and KBWD. Officials predicted 36 hours to splice the cables.

Woman near death after Canyon road crash

A Lawton Oklahoma woman, Mrs. Howard Pamplin, remained near death at Noblett Hospital after a 11 15 AM collision between a car and a bus near Canyon. Her husband had minor injuries. Eyewitness Mrs. Ratliff said the car pulled into the bus’s path as both vehicles met at the underpass near the city limits. The bus did not stop until clear of the underpass. no bus occupants were reported injured.

Strike Postponed for 24 Hours by Oil Workers

A U S conciliation service commissioner said about 20 000 CIO oil workers in five western states will delay their previously scheduled strike for another 24 hours. The move follows a failed wage dispute settlement with seven major oil companies and a final meeting planned with Standard Oil in El Segundo near Los Angeles.

Lease at Pantex Expanded to Texas Tech and A&M

The War Assets Administration announced that five more acres and eight buildings at the Pantex Ordnance Plant east of Amarillo have been leased to Texas Tech and Texas A. and M. College for seven years at 3139 dollars yearly. The two colleges will cooperate on experiments to combat winter wheat poisoning and grass tetany affecting grazing livestock, joining the previously leased 8500 acres of the 15000-acre plant area.
