Corper Hartman Emerges From Choiseul With Strange War Tale

Corporal Joe Hartman of Birmingham Alabama rejoined forces after 65 days on Choiseul Island sharing a bizarre wartime account. He survived a Flying Fortress midair split, glided free, and swam ashore near the native village. He captured a Japanese pilot, shot him when he tried to escape, and later lived with island natives. Hartman traveled by native canoe to Santa Isabel Island then to Tulagi and Guad Canal. He described eating a flying fox bat and sleeping with a island chief until his wound healed.
