John D M Hamilton a former Republican national chairman disclosed that an in home worker named Arthur Kalb an alien was arrested as an enemy alien and placed in government custody. Hamilton said he notified the FBI months earlier about an un naturalized German employed in his household and that his wife who worked as cook was not detained.

Police say Glenn Davis 22 from Oklahoma City was shot and critically wounded at the Baton Rouge police headquarters after attempting to escape while being questioned about coin machine robberies. He had been arrested midnight and admitted rifling coin machines in saloons over the weekend. A window was jumped and he fled. Captain J B Savario fired, hitting him under the shoulder blade.
The draft system will have a reservoir of about 26 million potential selectees after tonight’s office closures, including those already called. Failing to register can bring a $10,000 fine or up to 10 years in prison. The war department will reclassify deferred workers and may expand registration to 18 20 and 46 64 age groups for non combatant service within three months.
A United Press report from San Francisco notes that despite orders, enemy aliens remain near Pacific Coast defense zones and key sites. Registration, surrender of radios and weapons, arrests, and internment aim to prevent a fifth column. California hosts about 9,500 Japanese aliens and citizens with around 3,000 interned.
In Atlanta on February 16, 35 women volunteered for the Civil Air Patrol as part of the CAP Georgia wing. Fifteen are qualified pilots, others study aerial observation, radio, navigation, meteorology and mechanics weekends and evenings. They seek no sex discrimination in CAP missions and vow readiness for any emergency. The group includes office clerks, salesgirls, stenographers, lawyers and mothers.
Charles A Lindbergh registered in Washington for selective service while smiling and declining to answer questions. He previously held a commission in the air corps reserves and resigned last summer amid speeches criticizing the President. He is now on a civilian research assignment for the War Department. HMS Culver Sunk by British Admiralty report notes the former U S coast guard cutter was sunk.
Front-line reports describe Hitler’s defenses stiffening as the Moscow spring offensive continues. Russians say German reserves are met with heavy losses and counterattacks are repelled. A front-line dispatch claims a 30 mile advance in one sector. A Stockholm broadcast says the Red Army nears the old Polish frontier within 72 miles and approaches Wilno in Lithuania.
