London reports a tentative peace feeler after Gen. MacArthur announces the end is in sight in the Luzon campaign. American forces seize Cavite and Nichols Field near Manila Bay, inflicting heavy Japanese losses. Air bombardments cripple key targets as Corregidor remains under siege and Manila endures intense combat.
The court martial sentence of 27 year old Private Henry Weber who refused to drill at Camp Roberts California was reduced from death to life at hard labor and then to five years imprisonment to equalize the sentence with War Department policy. Maj. Gen. Myron C. Cramer, judge advocate general, informed Senate Military Committee Chairman Thomas in a letter.
Lt. Col Burt W Marshall of Greenville Texas survived a German attack in northern France after Captain Royce W Priest landed his P 51 in a small field and carried the colonel to safety. Priest earned the Distinguished Service Cross for the rescue while Marshall later recalled another near-disaster near Emden. Priest previously logged 67 missions and a score of 10, with multiple decorations from the Eighth Air Force shuttle to Russia and Warsaw.
Marshal Stalin reports a Red Army breakthrough across a 65 mile Silesian front aiming at Dresden as Allied air forces bomb Dresden and surrounding targets. About 4000 American and British aircraft participate in the assault, intensifying the push toward victory in Europe.
Washington February 14 Undersecretary of War Robert P Patterson told the House Military Affairs Committee that military leaders believe the end of fighting in Europe is not in sight and more troops will be in combat next month. He urged nurse draft legislation and noted 400,000 American wounded this war with weekly totals rising in mid January. He warned there is no time to lose as casualties mount and emphasized that nursing needs must be filled with minimal disruption to civilian care.
The PM in London runs an interview with Alicia Street, a former American woman now aiding cross language translation. Street recalls British soldiers questioning pay gaps and the treatment of Black Americans in the Army, and notes general popularity of Negro people in England.

European dispatches report Germany vows to scrap war rules for a brutal fight and to employ any means. Paul Schmidt cites the Crimean declaration, while Stockholm and Swiss agencies note fear of poison gas and demoralization. Berlin orders Volkssturm arm registrations by Feb 20.
