Col Charles Lindbergh suspended his planned flight as radio reports from Nassau said Harry Rogers and his three companions were safe. The Lone Eagle had intended to aid in the search before abandoning the trip.
The Senate weighs Caraway bill to curb trading in cotton and grain futures. The Commerce Committee reports on selling government ships to Paul W. Chapman, Inc. The House advances an appropriation bill while Ways and Means pushes tariff hearings. A joint session counts electoral votes. House actions include Philippines bills and a Justice Department probe of Judge Winslow.
Hidalgo county contest appeal denied after a 91 to 26 vote to hear the petition and 74 to 55 to deny reopening. The Senate will continue consideration of a 16 million dollar two year rural public school development bill introduced by Sen. Thomas Pollard with a Dallas substitute defeated.
President Coolidge asks Congress to provide 12,370,000 for cruiser construction starting next fiscal year. The amount is about half the Navy’s request, and Secretary Wilbur faced questions from the Senate Appropriations Committee in private session regarding the cruiser allowance.
Attorneys for Charles Chadd the former smelter worker convicted of assault with intent to kill filed a motion Tuesday for a new trial in district court. They contend that testimony about Chadd firing at Detective O H Denton during the arrest was inadmissible and should not have been admitted in the Sullivan shooting case.
United Press reports in Falls Texas that a grand jury is to probe the death of Arthur Pendergraft a wealthy Cotton County Oklahoma farmer. D J Hoobler once foreman of the Pendergraft farms led officers to the body hidden in a clump of bushes at Lake Wichita. Hoobler admits killing Pendergraft in defense on January 27.
Two demented mothers face sanity tests after confessing to poisoning and strangling seven infants. Mrs. Okel Gorham and her mother Mrs. Ethel Lewin allegedly killed five of their own and possibly more. Authorities probe if additional babies died at their hands beyond the five.
The treasury urged the House Appropriations Committee to provide an additional 2.5 million dollars this year for enforcing prohibition. The request accompanies debate on Senator Harris Georgia's bid for 24 million dollars immediately. Mellon said the request would go through the budget bureau in the normal process.
London dated February 14. The Salvation Army named Edward J. Higgins its new commander in chief after a secret council vote of 42 to 17 over Evangeline Booth. The appointment followed an earlier ruling that General Bramwell Booth, the founder's son, was unfit to continue due to ill health.
U S Senator O A Larrazola is near death at his Albuquerque home according to physicians reports. A priest was summoned to administer the last sacrament at his residence today.
A. V. Rice, 42, Grimes County deputy sheriff, was accidentally shot Wednesday in the Anderson courthouse and remained in serious condition at Bryan hospital on Friday.
Seven members of the Moran North Side gang were shot dead in a blankly staged raid at their North Clark Street HQ. The attackers, posing as police, drove up in two cars, forced the men to raise their hands, and opened fire with shotguns and machine guns. Two others were gravely wounded. The bodies were found at the nearby Cartage Company rear room after a woman caller alerted police.
The widow of County Detective William E. Jackson, Gertrude Jackson, died by her own hand in Willimantic Connecticut. A suicide note she wrote was found and turned over to the medical examiner, with police hoping it would aid in solving the death of the detective. Griggs ambulance attended. Phone 4211.
The Rt. Rev. Irving T. Johnson of Colorado critiques self righteousness and labeled neighbors as harming the church. He urges direct critique of members and avoids turning the church into a mutual admiration society. His Amarillo speech drew crowds from Lubbock Plainview Clarendon and nearby towns as he spoke at St Andrew's Episcopal.
