Amarillo and the Panhandle brace for a brutal cold spell with 12 to 18 degree lows expected tonight. Snow flurries possible, winds high, and livestock warnings issued as temperatures plummet across the region.
Wilbur C Hawk Amarillo publisher and civic leader died at 6 30 this morning at 2121 Hughes Street after a heart attack his staff reported. Funeral services set for 3 pm Friday at Central Presbyterian Church with burial in Llano mausoleum Amarillo. He led Globe News Publishing Co Tri State Fair West Texas Chamber of Commerce and State Planning Board and was active in Rotary Red Cross and relief efforts. He was born February 10 1881 in Bakeraville Ohio and previously served as deputy warden in Atlanta before moving to Amarillo in 1926. He is survived by his wife Hallie and several siblings, with services and tributes pending from local officials and colleagues.
Berlin February 12 The government issued an ordinance to marshal labor and military service for all German citizens abroad including double nationals. Citizens must report to the German consulate when their class is called up and undergo medical examination. Those deemed fit must pay their own travel costs to Germany. Consuls will maintain a roster of eligible persons.
