In Clarendon Texas Panhandle police hunt two armed men who robbed a bank of $8,000 after locking eight people in a vault and fleeing. The bandits refused a $50 offer and a customer’s cash deposit, then left before threatening to reopen the time vault. The bank had been robbed of $8,000 two years earlier.
Senator Tom Connally was ordered to bed today by his physician due to la grippe. He had been ill for a day or two but went to his office this morning, then felt faint and was sent home.
In Waxahachie Texas on February 10 1950 attorneys clashed in judge Tom Balls courtroom during the trial of Schuyler Marshall Jr and H W McBride for burglary and kidnapping. District Attorney Gray and McBride attorney R L Sullivan fought after a dispute over McBride testifying. Judge Ball fined both lawyers and ordered McBride to testify though he refused to answer each question citing self incrimination.
Beniamino Gigli to sing Friday night at Municipal Auditorium drawing fans from Western Oklahoma and Eastern New Mexico. Mail orders accepted with balcony seats $1.50 and downstairs $2 to $2.50. 50 cents available for music lovers. Gigli, famed Metropolitan Opera star, is noted for philanthropy, giving much of his income to charity and performing in army camps and hospitals since 1914. Hubert Stevens of Lake Placid defeats Swiss youth Reto Capadrutt in the Olympic two man bobs run. Stevens clocks 1:59.69 and 1:57.68 in final heats, finishing four heats in 4:14.74 to capture the title and push the United States ahead. Capadrutt takes second with a 1:59.67 final run.
W H Stroud, convicted in Childress County of murdering Wayne Lawson in a bet over sheriff election checks, was granted a new trial by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. The court reversed an affirmance and remanded. The 1928 slaying followed a bet dispute over the checks.
Amarillo returns street lighting to the prechange schedule with white ways on at dark and off at 10 30 PM except West Sixth Avenue and Country Club Bivins additions where lights stay on all night. The move follows January costs of 4846.83 dollars and public feedback.
