Truman dares Congress to trim 71 billion budget

President Truman challenged Congress to cut his 71 billion budget at a Washington news conference. He praised the budget as good and tight, inviting legislators to try. He warned of past attempts to cut it while noting that excess spending has risen, calling the threat intolerable in an emergency. The same day the Army ordered striking railroad workers to report by Saturday or face dismissal and announced wage increases for yardmen and road service employees.

Death of recluse Miss Inez Sweeney shocks rural readers

The lone resident of 304 Kentucky, Miss Inez D. Sweeney, 78, died as fire gutted her cluttered living room. Neighbors saw the one room piled with daily newspapers and trash. Officials estimate estate value above $60,000, with heir Bert McCullough handling affairs since 1929.

President Truman denounces a Senate subcommittee report as asinine for alleging that White House influence aided RFC loan applicants. He says the charge is an attempt to reflect personally on him and criticizes the report's treatment of Donald S. Dawson, an administrative assistant, after a lengthy RFC probe led by Senator J. William Fulbright.

The Weather Bureau reports considerable high cloudiness and warming this afternoon and tonight with a mild trend continuing, then a cold turn Friday night. Amarillo highs around 67 today and 68 tomorrow, lows near 33 both nights. a separate Amarillo note shows highs 59 and 62 with similar lows. West Texas remains clear to partly cloudy and warmer with a cold turn expected Friday. New Mexico is fair with warmer conditions in the east today and cooler northeast Friday.

Los Angeles County counts rise after Nevada atomic tests

Los Angeles radios are measurably hotter but not dangerously so following atomic blasts near Las Vegas. A survey shows background counts up 12 to 25 percent. Dr. C. C. Lauritsen of Caltech says normal counts would have to rise hundreds of times before radioactivity is dangerous.

US tanks shelled Seoul ruins and howitzers pounded Chinese positions north of the Han River while South Korean troops seized a commanding height near the city. The Allied line pushed forward and the Eighth Army reported heavy enemy losses in the pocket south of the Han.

Nine Die in Blast at Minnesota Mining Plant

A blast at the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company plant in St Paul killed nine men and possibly more. Officials suspect gas furnace explosions in the basement as the cause while the six story building housed 60 workers at shift change.
