About two thousand people surged toward the Georgetown courthouse to storm the building during the trial of Harry Butler, a Black man charged with assaulting Eleanor Steinmetz of Bridgeville. Soldiers used tear bombs from upper windows after wire fences were breached. twenty to thirty bombs were fired, some spectators slightly injured.
Eighteen men were rescued from the tug Wellington by the tanker Ardmore after a collision off the New Jersey coast.
