A threatened strike of building service workers in Midtown garments, fur and millinery districts was averted. In Pekin Illinois a flying squad of union pickets halted deliveries of food and fuel raising the prospect of National Guard involvement as labor leaders coordinate plans to paralyze the 16,000 population.
President Roosevelt, amid major financial discussions, plans today's farm tax briefing to fund the new farm program. He notes $500 million needed, with no current plan for new levies and says taxes would replace invalidated AAA processing levies. Secretaries Morgenthau Wallace and legal officials attend.
Reports from Pekin New York London and Santiago show general strikes disrupting city life. In Pekin conciliation efforts speed up as troops remain nearby while New York elevator operators and millinery workers stage action and garment workers vote on Friday. In London government intervention looms as meat supply slows. In Chile sabotage grows around state railways amid protests by 700 distillery workers. Union participation appears below full strength with about 1500 workers out, including the distillery crew seeking a closed shop and collective bargaining.
The House Agriculture Committee voted to repeal the Bankhead cotton, Kerr tobacco, and Warren potato control acts. The Senate has approved similar Roosevelt urged legislation. A hundred Potter County youths from relief families will begin work tomorrow on a roadside park development as part of a centennial beautification effort. A W Brisbin, WPA official, said workers aged 16 to 25 should apply at the National Employment Service Bureau for assignments. W J VanLondon, highway division engineer, will lead the project with NYA support from R W Strode. They will be secondary wage earners at 10.65 dollars a month for 46 hours of work in the 30 day period.
Nazis in Germany pledged to persist in their anti semitic course after the assassination of Wilhelm Gustloff. Adolf Hitler's Voelkischer Beobachter demanded complete fulfillment of the anti semitic issue without compromise following the Davos killing by a Yugoslav medical student who said he was Jewish.
About 10 000 articles of clothing will be distributed to city children next week. WPA sewing room produced the items with federal funds. Distribution will be overseen by Mayor Ross Rogers welfare workers and social staff at 207 Polk Street, with adult signatures required.
A jury in Amarillo remains deadlocked in the second trial of George S Hamlin a former Oakland fireman accused in his wife s murder. Foreman A G White reports the 12 jurors are evenly split with no word on their position as judge Reese Tatum urges a verdict before week s end. Hamlin s previous Amarillo trial ended in a hung jury eight to four in favor of conviction.
Forecast for Amarillo and nearby areas calls for fair conditions tonight and Thursday with a slight warmup to about 18 degrees. West Texas expected to be partly to mostly cloudy with rain in the southeast tonight and Thursday and warmer readings in the north and east tonight and Thursday. Rome reports Mussolini and the Grand Council pledged counteraction to any oil embargo by the League. The session backed expansion in Ethiopia and called for sterner measures, while denying specifics. Officials noted Italy might sever diplomatic relations over oil sanction plans.

A Potter County grand jury indicted 17 year old Clovis Ray Howard for the shotgun slaying of his stepfather Indian Joe Taylor outside the Green Hut near the Fairgrounds. J E Cullen faces murder charges for the slaying of jeweler Victor Carlucci and the Nightclub incident victim Dude Miles. Both suspects are jailed without bond, with indictments delivered by Sheriff Bill Adams and ADA Bob Underwood.
San Francisco police hold warrants for Ann Cooper Hewitt's mother Mrs Mary Cooper Hewitt and two doctors Dr Tilton Tillman and Dr Samuel Boyd. The trio are sought on a $500000 damage suit filed by Miss Hewitt alleging she was duped into sterilization. no arrests planned as officers await surrender and bail arrangements.

In Davos Switzerland on February 5 1936 Wilhelm Gustloff 40 Nazi leader was shot dead by Yugoslav medical student David Frankfurter 21 who claimed he acted alone to avenge Jewish suffering. He surrendered to police in Davos and said he intended to shoot Hitler.
The Supreme Court granted a rehearing in a case challenging a Hidalgo County tax remission after a later legislative act altered the issues. The action was announced in Austin on February 5.
The Appropriations Committee proposes 989 million for treasury and post office operations for 1937, with 400 thousand for federal alcohol administration and half a million for Coast Guard aircraft. The total exceeds the current year by 29.6 million but falls 11.9 million below budget estimates. Postal service appropriations rise to 7718,140,684, up 49.3 million from the prior year, while treasury totals reach 211,483,145 after cuts of about 19.7 million from comparable levels.
The American Business Club sponsors a dance at The Nat to aid the Goodfellows fund for hungry school children. Admission is $1 per couple. President J W Hill expects to raise several hundred dollars. Lloyd Snyder's orchestra provides the music.
In Monterrey on February 5 organized labor and capitalists joined a two day shutdown to denounce alleged Communist attempts at Bolshevik rule. Forty two syndicates backed the action closing all shops and services except two newspapers El Porvenir and El Sol. A noon demonstration drew about sixty thousand people amid fears of unrest as federal troops prepared to prevent disorders after street clashes between medical students and alleged Communists.
Texas crime survey announced by Gov. Allred and A N Reily covering convict release systems and offender profiles. Forty five WPA workers to operate for 12 months at a 33000 dollar cost with data sent to Washington for nationwide analysis. Reily's area includes Texas Louisiana Mississippi Oklahoma and Arkansas.
John W. Keogh 72, charged with shooting Attorney Christopher Kinney in Judge Prystalski's court on January 13, was declared insane by a jury in Chicago. The verdict labeled him a courtroom slayer, and the decision came in the court of Judge Joseph Burke.
Governor Hoffman said a letter exists from Dr John F Condon dated August 23 1932 stating he could identify one or two of the kidnappers. The letter, to a Florida attorney, supports claims that more than one person was involved in the Lindbergh baby kidnapping.
Eleven year old Gloria Laure Vanderbilt was guarded by private detectives at her aunt Mrs. Harry Payne Whitney's estate in Old Westbury N Y as police hunted two gunmen suspected in an attempted kidnapping. The assailants invaded during a sleet storm and fled in a car left running at the gates after confrontation with Thomas Griffin 77 estate superintendent.
Amarilloan Garford Wilkinson describes test driving the new Lincoln Zephyr at the Ford and Lincoln Automobile Show on Polk Street. He claims to have flown the car at 60 miles per hour and hovers between metaphor and car jargon while praising the vehicle’s streamlined workmanship.
