Damon Runyon’s famous short stories continue with the second installment of Lonely Heart in The Globe. The weekly series resumes the popular, character driven tales that spotlight Runyon’s distinctive urban voice.
In a darkly comic tale, Nicely Nicely learns of Widow Crumb’s chilling method for disposing of husbands. Harley details a string of deaths including arsenic in beans and a hanging, while the widow’s calculated insurance schemes and wary plans unfold with mounting unease.
In Amarillo, four large construction projects closed this morning as Construction General Labor Local 688 calls a strike for union recognition. Leslie Henslee says 50 commercial and residential jobs will be picketed this afternoon and tomorrow.
Potter county commissioners voted to hire an architect to design an industrial exhibit building 200 feet by 100 feet and an addition to the Automobile Building. The expansion doubles floor area, joins the south side, extends to the road, and covers the poultry exhibit space. Construction aims for use at the 1947 fair September 22 to 27.
Amarillo and vicinity clear this afternoon with continued cold conditions. Winds shift to southeasterly, remaining raw tonight. Wednesday brings fair skies and rising temperatures. West Texas and New Mexico show fair to partly cloudy conditions with sharp night dips and cooler east portions.

Mrs. M J Rogers of Amarillo says sugar poured into the crankcase ruined her 1 ton cattle truck. Foremen in several shops report a mild sugaring problem with other trucks, with engines sticking after heating the sugar oil mix.
The Texas House adjourned after less than an hour of debate centering on reading resolutions and assigning bills. Rep. Evans urged five day sessions while others questioned lengthy hours and welfare bill funding amid debate over eligibility and administrative costs. Action on the welfare bill was postponed until tomorrow.
Ivan D. Carson told the Senate Banking Committee that a 10 percent rent increase was not warranted under present standards. He said the advisory view supported administrative handling, while Maj. Gen. Fleming shouldered the drafting responsibility after the order was halted by President Truman. Senator Sparkman urged citizen volunteer boards to review rent boost applications.
The House Judiciary Committee endorsed a constitutional amendment limiting the presidency to two terms with six Democrats dissenting and votes from fifteen Republicans and five Democrats. The measure would require two thirds in both houses and ratification by 36 states before applying to the 1948 election.
Weather Doctor H C Winburn notes a second dose of the cold returns as a front passes last night. Winds veer southerly today with a 41 degree high and a 10 degree low. Tomorrow warms to near 50 as last night dropped to 20. John Maynard Lumber Co offers quality lumber at 800 W 5th.
Patsy Ruth Fergus a 16 year old blind student in Los Angeles faces a choice between leaving school or giving up her guide dog Lucky after the city school board ruled the dog cannot attend classes. Hazel Hurst of the foundation for the blind argued the dog is essential for Patsy’s independence and learning.
Amarillo actress Ann Lee will star in Amarillo Little Theater’s second show of the season Here Today on February 18 due to her father’s death delaying another performer. Lee, returning from Broadway work in Oh Mistress Mine, previously acted in Allison’s House Little Women The Late Christopher Bean and Quo Vadis with the local troupe. She has also appeared in Lady in the Dark on Broadway with Franchot Tone and toured with Zasu Pitts in Ramshackle Inn.
Four men were killed and a fifth injured when nitroglycerine exploded at the Helmerich and Payne oil lease five miles southeast of Holliday Archer County near Wichita Falls. Victims identified unofficially include C. F. Smith G. M. Shaffer and W. C. Shaffer and Nelson Mosier. Austin was treated for injuries. Cause unknown as communications to the area were clogged.
Dewey Dovel of Kilgore, a native of Elec tra, Tex., has been named manager of the new Gregg County Airport by the commissioners court.
El Paso mayor J. E. Anderson died in his hotel room after a heart attack. He was 67 and had served as mayor since 1939. The report notes his sudden passing while in the city.
Lois Bannerman arrives in Amarillo to guest with the Amarillo Philharmonic Orchestra at Municipal Auditorium for an 8:30 p m concert. She will perform a Ravel piece with the orchestra and harp solos including Sarabande Clair de Lune and Concert Variations on Adeste Fideles, a strong draw for local music lovers.
George Miller, a Black man rescued from a 200-strong mob in Osawatomie, Kansas, faces a first degree murder charge for the shooting of Police Chief Mike Churchill. Miller was sheltered at Lawrence jail as authorities pursue the case amid tense aftermath.
