Shivers urges temporary taxes to save Texas state hospitals
Gov Allan Shivers urged the Legislature to enact a broad based temporary tax to raise about 25 million dollars to operate state hospitals and special schools for 19 months and start a long range hospital building program. He proposed levies on oil and gas, whisky, cigarettes, autos, cosmetics, radios, cement, and utilities and urged funds be placed in a special emergency fund. This move follows his plan to fund the long term building program while avoiding deeper deficits.
