Amarillo Pioneer Mary Elizabeth Bivins dies at 89

Mary Elizabeth Bivins, widow of cattle operator Lee Bivins, died at 89 in Amarillo after a year of declining health. A longtime philanthropist, she funded churches, a chapel, elderly housing, and theological education, giving without fanfare. Her generosity supported numerous organizations and individuals. Her husband died in 1929 while mayor.

Home Overseer Hired by County Juvenile Detention

County commissioners appointed Fred H. Melson as overseer of the juvenile detention home. Melson, a longtime Amarillo worker, will earn 2700 dollars annually, taking over from Henry Maggard who resigned to rejoin Paul Gaither’s office. Oates leaves Randall County to join Potter County night patrol. Virginia Draper becomes sheriff’s secretary replacing Bonnie Allen, while Roe Looney is hired as County Attorney secretary, replacing Norma Steel.

Stranded Kentucky Family Finds Santa Spirit Amid Trials

The Greenwells family from Bardstown Kentucky faced a dire Christmas stranded in Amarillo Texas after the father James Greenwell aged 32 suffers multiple illnesses including chronic asthma and heart trouble. Police Sgt Jack Deaver and Panhandle residents stepped in with Christmas aid to help the family and their three children Marlene Diane and Vincent. The family had traveled toward Phoenix for the father’s health needs and faced a bleak holiday with the mother Christine recently discharged from hospital after giving birth December 7.

Missing house numbers found on Harrison Street front steps

Curbstone house numbers pulled from their moorings along Harrison Street were found deposited in front of a residence at 1613 Harrison Sunday morning. The numbers range from 2005 Harrison through the 2600 block. Owners may call 1613 Harrison. Neely-Greenhill-Lowndes-Insurance.

FBI Probes Childress Bank Theft

FBI agents questioned all employees of the First State Bank of Childress after a burglary that netted about $5,000 in silver Saturday night. Investigators say no forced entry marks were found and a welding torch cut a hole through a safe door. The crime may hinge on how the burglars entered and left the scene.

Occasional snow flurries and a sharp fall in temperatures Tuesday with winds diminishing and skies clearing by Tuesday night. Monday highs around 68 and Monday night lows 20 to 25. Custody Hearing Delayed in Boy Beating Case

Vernon December 31 Dist Judge Jesse Owens postponed the parental rights suit involving Mr and Mrs Robert Dale Simpson held in undisclosed jail. Hearing will be held later pending the boy Tommie's condition. no date set. Tommie regained partial consciousness and could eat cereal after his Christmas Eve beating. Local reaction plans a Christmas party upon recovery.
