Two white victims Mia Anse Everett 25 and Paul Brown 2, plus Hattie 22 and Nannie Lou Lee 16, with others fatally hurt or missing.
Federal court upholds House Bill 336 regulating motor trucks on Texas highways. L G Phares orders highway patrols to enforce the act as an injunction is dissolved effective January 1, removing prior constitutional objections to section 3 F regarding discrimination against articles such as cotton bales. Maximum limits rise to 17 000 under new provisions.
A slight earthquake rattled western Washington at 7 25 A M today. In Lilliwaup Hood Canal the tremor cracked the concrete wall of a new building.
Amarillo children can see Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn at the Globe News Fair Theater Saturday morning matinee. Cast mirrors Tom Sawyer with Jackie Coogan as Tom, Junior Durkin as Huckleberry Finn, Mitzie Green as Becky Thatcher, and Jackie Searle as Sid Sawyer, plus Eugene Palette for comedy. Admission is ten cents for all children 8 to 80, showtime 9 30.
United Press reports a Culbertson Lenz bridge match at the Waldorf Astoria where tensions rose as Ely Culbertson and Sidney Lenz faced off amid wagering and taunts. A dramatic three thousand nine hundred point swing widened Culbertson’s lead.
Professional safe crackers pried open three safes and a cash register in four Groom area establishments causing $97 in loot. Loot included $50 from Stubblefield General Merchandise and $40 from Groom Hardware. Hess Cash Grocery yielded only checks. Burglary occurred between 3 and 4 am. no clues found by Sheriff McCormick. loot did not include merchandise or checks.
Postal Inspector M B Johnson of Amarillo said burglars who tried to loot the Alanreed post office Tuesday night fled after dogs barked. The attempt failed as the heavy steel safe withstood their blows, leaving the safe on the sidewalk and no loot taken. Nearby residents reported early Wednesday dog barking.
Hollywood Florida December 31 Police Chief F L Barfield of Dania faced a seven car rum running motorcade as they sprayed machine gun fire from a lead car Barfield shouted Run and put down that gun I don t know how to run then opened fire with a shotgun as one man fell wounded The raiders fled leaving liquor seized by pursuing officers but the cars escaped toward Miami until they vanished off the trail.
Thomas McGowan cashier of the Citizens Union Bank and his wife freed by daybreak told authorities of a night robbery in Central City Kentucky. Five men netted about $2000 in silver after entering the McGowan home and forcing him to drive to the bank. They bound Mrs McGowan and two guards while the cashier opened the vault.
Furniture and file cabinet crating being moved into the new Potter County courthouse will be given to city families in need this winter as kindling and fuel, per county probation officer Mrs. Jennie N Ross.
The Democratic National Committee is accused of violating the corrupt practices act after Rep. Wood of Indiana criticized the Senate campaign funds committee for not probing DNC expenditures in 1928. He claims payroll concealment hid recipients of over 348000 dollars. the act requires names and addresses of all recipients over ten dollars.
Helsingfors reports a landslide for repeal in the prohibition referendum as 82 percent of 132,730 ballots favored ending the ban with women making up 60 percent of repeal voters. Continuance attracted 17.2 percent and a small share favored light wines and beer.
A Reuters dispatch from Helsingfors reports results from 88 rural constituencies showing 78,953 in favor of repeal, 18,858 for maintaining the present law, and 950 for modification, a margin of about 60,000 in those districts.
The Texas Railroad Commission granted railroad requests for higher intrastate freight rates for carload traffic aligning with Interstate Commerce Commission increases. A January 9 hearing is scheduled to consider applying the rise to less than carload traffic.
Chicago December 31 Julius Rosenwald prominent philanthropist and merchant sits gravely ill at his Highland Park home. His condition has prompted all of his children to rush to his bedside in a family health crisis.
T. Lu relle Guild aged 53 treasurer of the New York Cotton Exchange died at his Stamford Connecticut home. He joined the Exchange in 1904 and had served as treasurer since 1929.
Mary Helen Duggins, 13, died in a local hospital from malnutrition and worry after a year of unemployment and poverty. Her family, once living in Oklahoma and then Texas, lost access to food and schooling as older siblings helped with survival. The plasterers union funded the funeral.
A fringe of blizzard moved from Colorado through Kansas into the northern Oklahoma Panhandle, bringing 30 mile winds and light snow. Amarillo saw flurries and Guymon reported an inch. Beatrice Nebraska December 31 authorities opened a homicide inquiry into the deaths of Harry Whiteside 48 and John Marten 40 both residents of Beatrice. State chemists in Lincoln reported traces of a violent poison in vital organs guiding the investigation. Whiteside longtime fire chief was suspended after being charged with burglary complicity and Marten had been unemployed six weeks.
New York stock market report shows call money renewal at 3 percent, the highest since December 31, 1930, with a rise to 3 1/4 percent yesterday due to year end demand for funds.
Amarillo men face burglary charges in connection with a December 24 looting at the First State Bank in Booker. Suspects include George Brown 18 Buddy Blanton 21 Billy Culwell 30 arrested near the Tri-State fair grounds and whisked away by W J Pottorff deputy sheriff. Rob Betty 23 arrested in Amarillo and held at an unnamed jail. Fingerprints tied Betty to the looted bank.

Swollen streams across West Tennessee flooded several thousand acres of farmland and disrupted traffic. Nearly two inches of rainfall yesterday and last night raised water levels on the Middle North and South Fork Rivers, with the North Fork menacing state highway 6 a mile north of Trenton and the South Fork spreading over fields for a second overflow in three months.
In Oklahoma City on December 31, eight defendants led by oil promoter E. J. Cox and his wife go before a federal jury in the Universal Oil and Gas mail fraud case. Judge Edgar B. Vaught will finish arguments and give instructions. verdicts could yield sentences from one day to 117 days or substantial fines if convicted.
