Navy fliers spot Nazi destroyers in Biscay and aid sinking

Two US Navy fliers Lt. Stuart D. Johnston and Ensign Hugh M. Greeley spotted a flotilla of 11 German destroyers in the Bay of Biscay. They shadowed the ships for six hours, signaling for British warships to intervene. Three destroyers were sunk as cruisers closed in, with more damage reported on others.

Senate panel invites Jones on feed shortage inquiry

Austin December 30 Chairman Houghton Brownlee of the Texas Senate general investigating committee invited War Food Administration head Marvin Jones to appear January 3 for a possible continuation of the feed shortage probe. Jones is vacationing in Amarillo. Brownlee said the committee will decide if the study resumes when members meet, and invited Jones or a representative to attend.

Death claims Mrs. Thurmond in Elk City Oklahoma

Mrs. E. G. Thurmond aged 97 widow of a pioneer banker and rancher died at her Elk City home after a long illness. A Tennessee native who moved to Texas as a child she married in 1863 and helped found the First National Bank in 1902. Survivors include her son I. C. Thurmond of Amarillo Texas.

Tarawa veteran recalls horror of battle and fateful letters

Roy Stuart, a former Canyon student, writes from the Gilbert Islands theater recalling Tarawa’s brutal slaughter. He notes the limits of words to describe the horror and praises the bravery of fallen comrades while thanking God for the Stars and Stripes. He describes training in New Zealand, Maori influences, tea habits, and currency, and asks for letters to his FMF address in care of FPO San Francisco.

Mrs Goetz Dies On Denver Visit

Mrs Caroline Goetz of Amarillo died in a Denver hospital while visiting her son Larry Goetz in Denver. She resided in Amarillo since 1927 with two sons, Larry and William A Goetz, a sister Bertha Walters, and brothers Alex W Staab and Jake Staab. Body to arrive in Amarillo and be in state at Griggs Funeral Chapel. Dairy subsidy payments for November and December will be made in January with back October payments also issued. Applications to county AAA office in federal building. West Texas State College and Amarillo branch reopen next Monday after holiday break.

Feed Allocation Plan Explained

Be ASHINGTON Dec 30 An official plan outlines 20 percent of protein meal production to be allocated monthly by the government starting January 1 based on state needs. President Hutson of the Commodity Credit Corporation and Walter Berger of the War Food Administration announced the plan to Western senators noting distribution will occur through processors via normal channels.

French Saboteurs Wreck Rail Line Near Pons Germany

Bar celona dispatch reports on Dec 30 that French saboteurs damaged the German Atlantic Coast Railway near Pons north of Bordeaux. The act occurred on Dec 27 and went unnoticed until the Bordeaux Paris Express collided with a derailed freight train. Flying Fortresses burn 250 gallons per hour cruising and near double at full throttle.

Mother of Amarillo Women Recovering From Illness

Mrs. Mary Cage mother of Mrs. Lloyd Bivins of 1500 West Twentieth Avenue is recovering from a serious illness at her Birmingham Alabama home. Mr. Bivins learned this morning that Mrs. Cage is ill as three daughters Myda Margie and Patricia accompanied by Mrs. Bivins left Amarillo the day before Christmas to be at her bedside. Mrs. Cage has visited Amarillo frequently.
