Carbon Mountain three miles south of Durango continues to disintegrate with rumbling, shifting rock and hissing gas. The mountain appears to disintegrate into the Animas valley as avalanches grow and slides begin in the west ridge basin, lowering the peak and creating a broad slope.
A cobbled mix of theories on geology and folklore describes steam from buried lime deposits, coal fires driving rock to crack mountains, and a Bohemian general Zizka who used preserved human drums after death. It recalls Hussite wars and boxing suspensions, musk fixatives, and a dramatic Carbon Mountain collapse with avalanches reshaping the landscape.
Courthouse records show Jno J Harden and others transferring lot 17 in Ridgemere to Moble E Ricks for 300 dollars. Transfers also list Joe Cox and others selling lot 17 in Fairview Townsite to John Poe for 10 dollars.
