Amarillo expands utilities to meet growing city needs
Amarillo's public utilities have expanded dramatically since 1940 to match a population that has nearly doubled. The Amarillo Gas Company added many miles of new line and 8,000 new meters, water department installed 8,041 meters, Southwestern Public Service added 10,118 services, and Southwestern Bell more than doubled its telephones with 16,424 new lines. The Amarillo Bus Company now runs 52 buses across new residential areas. Postwar investments include new units at headquarters, a larger East Plant, pumping station upgrades, and three massive water towers. Cheap natural gas from nearby fields underpins industry, and the Canadian River Dam project will secure water supply.
