New York market reports show 30 Industrials at 12941 up 39, 20 Railroads at 2747 up 15, 15 Utilities at 19.72 up .18, with varied activity across major names including Alleghany, Lud Steel, Am Tel & Tel, Chrysler and General Motors. Kansas City livestock notes mention hogs lower and cattle steady, with prices across several weight classes and brands like Union Carbide and United Aircraft highlighted.
Mrs. C. C. George of 1109 Polk Street has recovered enough to move about her house after several days in the hospital.
Winter sports fans will find good skiing conditions at Taos and Hyde Park with new powder snow at Big Tesuque. Insufficient snow is reported at Gallinas Cedar Creek and Cloud Croft. roads are open but require chains. Aqua Piedra Taos reports 18 inches snow depth with 2 inches new powder. Hyde State Park 24 inches with 6 inches new powder. Big Tesuque 34 inches depth and 13 inches new powder. Taos Las Vegas Christmas ski meet set for Dec 29 at Aqua Piedra area.
In Austin on December 27, Dr. George W. Cox Texas state health officer said influenza is nearing epidemic levels. He cited 7,300 reported cases versus a normal 1,200 and 4,800 the prior week and urged individuals to avoid crowds stay physically fit keep feet warm and prevent colds.
Funeral services for Hayden A. Humphreys, who died Wednesday night, will be held at Griggs chapel at 2 p m tomorrow with Rev. Jordan Grooms and Rev Clyde Buchanan officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Pallbearers are F E Ingham A L Timmons Rankin Russell C W Parr David Dammier and Ramey McAllister. He helped found the Humphreys Highlands Addition. his wife survives.
A. O. Garrett, a longtime botany and biology instructor at East High School, retires at age 70 after 38 years in Salt Lake City schools. He began teaching in Kansas before moving to Utah in 1902, and credited his students' youthfulness with keeping him energetic through a half century in education.
The regular Friday evening Sabbath service at Temple B'nai Israel will not be held tonight. The service will resume next Friday night on January 3.
John W. Long, about 70, a Fort Worth & Denver janitor, was found dead at 8:30 am in the railroad yards near Johnson Street and the Rock Island water tower. Coroner Justice of the Peace Charlie Carder said death was from natural causes. The Griggs Chapel body bore no known relatives.
The Texas National Guard 36th Division engineers unit moves by motor convoy to Camp Bowie in Brownwood as plans set to have all division units relocated by January 20. Full division movement, special troops by January 1, artillery by January 15, with rocky terrain and heavy rains delaying setup and a new heavy freight schedule being drawn.
Members of the Llano Estacado Council of Boy Scouts meet to nominate officers and board members. Election is set for the annual council meeting on Thursday January 23. Committee includes Bishop E C Seaman chairman S G Stockton Leroy White Amarillo S E Brown Dalhart and John McLean Hereford.
At a Geological Society meeting in Austin Texas Dr. Patrick M Hurley and Dr. Clark Goodman described helium as a potential clock to date earth formations. They compare it with a lead method and estimate a billion year ages using uranium thorium decay and helium measurements. D Robinson, Santa Fe special agent, suffered a heart attack at Navajo Lodge and was taken to St Anthony's Hospital.
Anne Magdalena Murphy, a former slave in Cape Colony, died at about 120 years old in the Malay Camp at Klerksdorp. Her daughter Mrs. Williams, 70, says Mrs Murphy died unaware of the war and had never heard of Adolf Hitler.
The Jackson family of Berwick has practiced law for a century starting with Morrison E. Jackson admitted in 1840, followed by Charles B. in 1875, and Alex Jackson, Morrison’s grandson.
