Fred Jones Jr. an outstanding Amarillo senior and UT law student, died in a Miami plane crash while en route to join friends for the Sugar Bowl trip. Born in Amarillo, he starred as an end for Sandies and graduated from Amarillo High in 1945 before entering the University of Oklahoma.

Norther Barges On Plains Weather Drops After Warm Christmas

The low Christmas warmth gave way to a sharp cold front in the Panhandle. High hit 70 near record territory, then plummeted to 26 by 9 am. North winds 25 to 30 mph with tonight's 17 degree low. Holiday Death Toll Tops 675 Across US Christmas

The Associated Press reports a Christmas holiday death toll of 675 to 676 after 78 hours ending at midnight, with highway crashes blamed for 523 deaths and slushy ice from snow increasing peril. Fires, drownings, falls and other accidents added 153 fatalities, marking one of the nation’s deadliest three-day periods.

Charged man in attack on officer in Amarillo chase

Joseph Aaron Melot a 28 year old from Lubbock faces assault with intent to murder after an alleged highway patrol attack during a high speed pursuit with Charles Nathan Cox 23. Both were arrested after a chase on North East Eighth and Highways 60 and 66. Melot held in Potter County jail on $2000 bond. Cox also in custody.
