United Press reports 471 killed nationwide after Christmas. Traffic accidents on icy roads claim at least 249 lives while 222 deaths arise from shootings, suicides, fires, falls and other mishaps.
A Bowen bus from Houston plunged off a Five Mile Creek bridge near here killing passenger James Walden and injuring 11 others. Driver L G Anthony, treated for a facial injury, blamed a car swerving into the path on the opposite side.
Haganah leaflets in Jerusalem report several hundred Jewish refugees from Europe landed on the upper coast of Palestine today. The immigrants came aboard a 2200-ton motor schooner flying the Hebrew flag and were guided to inland dispersal points despite storms and British White Paper precautions.
State Fire Marshal Hickey says a panicky nurse fled Niles Street Hospital after dropping a fire extinguisher while trying to combat a Christmas Eve blaze. Flames spread to upper floors due to a draft as Gov Baldwin orders a statewide safety survey with Health Commissioner Osborn.
Winston Churchill accepts an official invitation to visit Czechoslovakia around his U S trip, with a departure from England expected in mid January. He may visit just before or after his scheduled vacation to the United States.
The Associated Press reports heavy snow rain and sleet eased today with no new cold wave. Snow covered much of the northern half while skies cleared in the south and southeast. Albany New York saw a rise to 34 above, Bismarck North Dakota led cold at 3 below, Florida cleared, and Miami and Brownsville reached 78 in warm Christmas weather.
The Southwest enjoyed unseasonably calm and sunny conditions while the nation faced storms. The Weather Bureau predicts yesterday's perfect weather will largely repeat today and tomorrow with a high near 61 and a low around 25 tonight.
Pineville Kentucky December 26 1930s miners between 30 and 35 were trapped when an underground explosion sealed their exit. Operator W E Lewis said the blast was so deep it was not heard outside and rescue teams prepared to enter. Conditions inside could not be assessed until the cave-in was penetrated.
Maj. Gen. Walter C. Short retired former commander of the Hawaiian theater at Pearl Harbor was reported better today at Walter Reed Hospital. The notice also mentions an advertisement for kitchen cabinets and house paints by John Maynard Lumber Co.
Acting Secretary of State Dean Acheson said the United States has notified France of readiness to discuss all aspects of relations with Franco Spain, in response to a French suggestion. Britain has replied too, with details to be released in London. Discussions may begin early in January.
Chicago December 26 Municipal Judge Francis Borelli said Henry Mason a junk dealer would be freed on a charge of blocking traffic with his push cart Mason demanded a jury trial and the judge set the hearing for January 3 Mason insisted I want 12 good men to hear my case and Borelli replied You can go home You are free.
New York reports Lt Russell Gleason 36 son of Jimmy Gleason plunged to his death from a midtown hotel fourth floor ledge. Police found his body on a second floor extension after a call from the ledge. Gleason, a former child actor and star of All Quiet on the Western Front, was married in 1938 to Cynthia Hobart.
Unofficial holiday truce ends as the United Automobile Workers resumes negotiations with General Motors and other automakers seeking a 30 percent wage increase. The talks focus on local plant grievances and higher wages, affecting about 498,000 workers. President Truman’s fact finding gave parties until Friday to settle without government intervention.
Police records show 13 moving violations listed for Monday and yesterday. Christmas Day offenses total three reckless driving fines, while prior day entries include running over a fire hose stopping at a red light and no license, with fines ranging from $3 to $50 and total Monday fines reaching $200.
Amarillo police report no injury accidents within city limits since last Saturday. Captain Tommy Thomas of the traffic division expresses optimism for maintaining the record through the rest of 1945.

Two Japanese naval officers and nine co defendants were condemned to death by hanging for the 1943 Wake Island massacre in which 96 American civilians were executed. Rear Adm. Shigematsu Sakaibara and Lt. Comdr. Soichi Tachibana received the sentences as the court adjourned.
